Extremely rare engraving and printed broadside, sheet 305 x 240mm (12 x 9½"). Laid down on backing sheet. Stain across the ministers. Some foxing.
Ministers tell a throne seated George II (1683–1760) of the death of his son Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707–1751). In the past his death has been attributed to a burst lung abscess caused by a blow from a cricket or a real tennis ball, but it is now thought to have been from a pulmonary embolism.

Probably a portrait of Virginia tobacco trade merchant and financier Edward Athawes (d.1767), sitting three-quarter to left, with a tricorn in his lap. His right arm is curled around his cane. Edward Athawes was a prominent London merchant in the tobacco trade, which financed American plantations, (owners including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington) with sizeable loans from London. When tobacco prices dropped precipitously in the 1750s, many plantations struggled to remain financially solvent. Jefferson, on the verge of losing his own farm, aggressively espoused various conspiracy theories. Though never verified, Jefferson accused London merchants of unfairly depressing tobacco prices and forcing Virginia farmers to take on unsustainable debt loads. Chaloner Smith quotes Bromley's description of a second state with Dickinson's name added. This suggests that Dickinson engraved this when still working for Carington Bowles. He also describes another Edward Athawes, clerk for the Cordwainer's Company, who died in 1796; neither the dress nor the need for 'memory' suits that attribution,

Henry Hope Crealock (1831-91), a captain in the 90th Light Infantry during the Crimean War, was an accomplished draughtsman, who also sketched during the Indian Mutiny, Opium Wars in China and the Zulu campaign (for the Illustrated London News). He retired from the army as a Lieutenant-General. Irish interest.

Plate from 'Sketches in North America and the Oregon Territory' by Captain Henry James Warre (1848). Warre (1819-98), aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief of the forces in British North America, made the sketches for the book in 1845-6 while undertaking a secret military reconnaissance tour of what is now Oregon and Washington, assessing the strategic value of the region. The land dispute between America and Britain which occasioned the mission was resolved by the Treaty of Oregon in 1846.

Head and shoulders portraits of Dost Mohammed Khan, his two sons Muhammad Akram Khan and Haider Khan, and his cousin Abd al-Ghani Khan, from Emily Eden's 'Portraits of the Princes & Peoples of India'. Dost Mohammed Khan had been Emir of Afghanistan until he was deposed by the British in 1839 at the beginning of the First Afghan War and exiled to Mussoorie. He returned to the throne after the disasterous conclusion to the war for the British. The Hon. Emily Eden, the seventh daughter of William Eden, first baron Auckland, accompanied her brother, George, Lord Auckland (1784-1849) to India, where he served as Governor-General from 1835-1842. A highly gifted amateur artist and writer, Eden recorded her observations of life in India during this period in the form of letters and an extensive collection of sketches, meeting people like Dost Mohammed using her brother's influence. On her return to England in 1842, Eden arranged to have her images printed privately as a portfolio of 24 lithographs.

In 1771 he published Principles of Penal Law, and soon became a recognized authority on commercial and economic questions. In 1772 he took up an appointment as an under-Secretary of State. He represented New Woodstock in the parliaments of 1774 and 1780, and Heytesbury in those of 1784 and 1790. In 1776 he became a commissioner on the Board of Trade and Plantations. In 1778 he carried an Act for the improvement of the treatment of prisoners, and accompanied the earl of Carlisle as a commissioner to North America on an unsuccessful mission to settle certain disputes with certain colonists there. On his return in 1779 he published his widely-read Four Letters to the Earl of Carlisle, and in 1780 became Chief Secretary for Ireland. He gained election to the Irish House of Commons as the member for Dungannon and became a member of the Irish Privy Council. While in Ireland he established the National Bank. In 1840 Gov. Hobson selected and named the site of Auckland after him, now the capital of New Zealand. For a short period it was called Bishop's Auckland.

The adults hold doves; the boy yawns with boredom. A clipping from a printseller's catalogue, pasted underneath the print, suggests the bespectacled artist is a caricature of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Certainly the round glasses are similar to the ones worn in the Reynolds self-portrait in the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

A medieval man of Clan Fergusson, barefoot, without a tartan, carrying a hand shield and light sword. From Robert Ronald McIan's The Clans of the Scottish Highlands', Volume II, published in 1847. McIan (1803-56, also Robert Ranald McIan), was a Scottish actor and painter best known for romanticised depictions of Scottish clansmen, their battles and domestic life.

A half-length portrait in oval of Sir Robert Fletcher (c.1738-76) in uniform. A lieutenant the East India Company, he was cashiered for insolence, but was restored in time to serve in the Seven Years's War, leading to a promotion to captain and a knighthood for gallantry in action. However in 1766 he was court-martialled and cashiered again by Robert Clive for his involvement in the Monghyr Mutiny. He returned to England, became MP for Cricklade and campaigned for reinstatement to the the E.I.C. again, which he achieved in 1769, with a promotion to colonel. In 1772 he assumed command of the Madras Army, but came into conflict with the local E.I.C. governor, leaving India again in 1773. As an MP he called for an inquiry into the business of the East India Company; soon after the Company re-engaged his services, promoting him to brigadier-general in Madras, and he withdrew from the 1774 General Election. Back in India again he clashed with a different governor of Madras, Lord Pigot but, ill with tuberculosis, Fletcher left India, dying on Mauritius.

A portrait in oval of Horneck sisters: Mary Gwyn (1753-1840) and Catherine Bunbury (1754-1799) in costume, Windsor Castle behind. The theme is jokey, as the women were married to court equerries. Mary (married to General Francis Gwyn, equerry to George III) was also painted by Joshua Reynolds in Indian costume. Catherine's husband was the noted caricaturist Henry William Bunbury, appointed equerry to the Duke of York and Albany in 1787.

She was the very favourite subject of Sir Joshua Reynolds, and appears as the beautiful female in a number of his most celebrated pictures Two in particular are professed portraits of her called 'Mrs Hartley as Jane Shore' and 'Mrs Harley as a Raehante.
