The title page and 21 numbered etchings of animals and birds (lacking 5, recumbent lion & 14, girl and goat). Originally published c.1641 by Pierre Mariette in Paris: these are from the third state, with Mariette's name erased from the title. See BM 1871,0513.56 for the second state of the title.

The set of Four Elements: Earth & Air are landscapes; Fire and Water are seascapes, Fire with a ships on fire, Water with a storm. Etched by Stefano della Bella (1610-54), one of the greatest of Italian printmakers, whose diverse output, characterised by the compression of great precision and detail into small composions, has been the focus of a number of exhibitions and scholarly publications in recent years. One from the set of six views that Stefano della Bella (1610-64) produced of the villa at Pratolino, near Florence. Built for Francesco I de'Medici in the sixteenth century, the villa was praised by Montaigne, amongst others. This view shows the spectacular path from the garden to the villa, along which the visitor walks beneath a succession of fountain jets. After being left unattended for much of the eighteenth century, the villa was demolished in 1820 and the garden was redesigned. It is now part of the Villa Demidoff, as it was named by a Russian industrialist who owned the site in the nineteenth century. De Vesme 839 ii/iii

Extremely rare etching. 265 x 365mm (10½ x 14½"). Trimmed into plate at sides.
A plate originally published in 1639 as an advertisement for a debate defending a thesis celebrating the Spanish Franciscan friar, Saint Francis Solano (1549-1610), for his works with the indigenous communities in the Peruvian Viceroyalty of Spain. It depicts Solano in Franciscan garb, his arms encircling a rising sun, Lima in the left background and Potosi, the mountain off silver, in the right. The plate is often accompanied by a second plate ;isting the sixteen theses to be disputed flank an image of the seminal Franciscan theologian Duns Scotus (1266-1308).
