A 8' statue of Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805), dressed as a Roman soldier, standing on a pedestal flanked by figures of Fortitude & Prudence. Commissioned by the residents of Calcutta, designed by John Bacon senior and completed by his son John Bacon junior, it is now in the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, India. Governor-General of India (1786-1793), Charles Cornwallis became famous for his reforming administration. He established the Cornwallis (or Bengal) code for stamping out corruption and pioneered a more professional, salaried civil service. His improvements had valuable long-term consequences for the effective government of India.

Charles Hope, Lord Granton (1763-1851), judge. Hope was appointed lord advocate in 1801 and was presented with the freedom of the city of Edinburgh shortly afterwards for his assistance to magistrates in obtaining a bill for the poor of the city. This print was published shortly before Hope was appointed as an ordinary lord of session and lord justice clerk, and given the title of Lord Granton. Hope's distinguished legal career lasted until his retirement from the bench in 1841. When the volunteer movement began during the Napoleonic Wars, Hope enlisted firstly as a private, later being appointed lieutenant-corporal. Fine engraving after a portrait by Henry Raeburn now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The print is one of few published by Pasquale Garof (1774-1808), a carver and gilder born in Como, Italy who established a business in Edinburgh.

Dmitry Dmitrievich Shepelev (1771-1841). Born into a noble family he enlisted as a sergeant in the Russian Life Guards in 1782. He served in Poland (1794), Persia (1796), Switzerland (1799, under Rimsky-Korsakov) and the Battle of Austerlitz (1805). In 1813 he led an advance guard of Wittgenstein's Corps that captured Koenigsberg. In 1815 he became commander of the 2nd Hussar Division, but had to retire due to ill-health the following year. George Dawe (1781 - 1829) spent from 1819 to 1828 in St Petersburg, invited by Tsar Alexander to paint the portraits of the superior officers who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Over 300 of these are in the Hermitage Museum.

Seated portrait of Joseph Sturge (1793-1859), he holds 'Human brotherhood through the Bible' in his left hand and his right is around the shoulders of a little black girl. Sturge was a Quaker and founder of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, now Anti-Slavery International, who spent his life engaged in Radical political actions supporting pacifism, working class rights, and the universal emancipation of slaves. In Jamaica, Joseph Sturge helped to found Free Villages with the Baptists, one of which was named Sturge Town in his memory.
