John Lord Hervey.
John Lord Hervey.
T. Cook sculp
Publish'd as the Act directs April 1st 1778 by Tho.s Cadell in the Strand.
Engraving, sheet 195 x 130mm (7¾ x 5"). Trimmed; false margins added.
John Hervey, second Baron Hervey of Ickworth (1696-1743), courtier and writer. In politics Hervey's fortunes were closely linked to those of Robert Walpole, of whom he was a staunch supporter. It was his support for Walpole that Hervey in 1730 became Vice-Chamberlain and Lord Privy Seal (a post obliging him to spend much time with Queen Caroline, who he became very close to) and was elevated to the House of Lords in 1733. Hervey left the government shortly after Walpole, in 1742. Hervey quarrelled notably in the 1730s with William Pulteney (over politics, culminating in a duel in Green Park in which both men were wounded), Prince Frederick (over women) and with the poet Alexander Pope (over both politics and women). Opposing Pope inevitably led to Hervey becoming part of literary history as a target for satire, particularly in Pope's 'Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot' (1735). Hervey was also a notable writer himself, whose posthumously published 'Memoirs' are an indispensible source for events at the court of George II from 1727-37. As his quarrels suggest, Hervey led an energetic sexual life. He was bisexual; Lady Mary Wortley Montagu wrote that humankind was divided into three sexes: men, women, and Herveys.
