A French Spy taken Prisoner by English Girls.
[by Thomas Colley.] [n.d., engraved c.1781 but printed later.] Etching on thick wove paper. 250 x 355mm (9¾ x 14"). Trimmed to plate at sides. According to a mss. inscription on the BM's example, this is a satire on François Henri de la Motte, who was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered for gathering intelligence on the British fleet dispositions at Portsmouth and other British ports during the American Revolutionary War, in which France was aiding the Americans. In the end the court was merciful: he was hung for nearly an hour, had his heart cut out and burned, but he was spared the dismemberment. BM 1988,0514.18.
