He also planned a series of historical pictures to decorate the Duke of Richmond's apartment at Goodwood, commemorating the deeds of famous Englishmen.

These views of various ports of France are from a series of paintings by the French painter Joseph Vernet, executed between 1754 and 1765, commissioned by King Louis XV to promote the French navy. Upon completion, the total of fifteen paintings were exhibited in Paris in the Royal Academy's Painting and Sculpture Exhibition.
