Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands, where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth, from the "Views in Scotland" series. Although it cannot be proved it is believed that 'I. Clark" is the Scottish painter John Heaviside Clark, famed as 'Waterloo Clark' for his early sketches of the Battle. He was also skilled in aquatinting, and certainly none of this series has a named engraver.

Königstein Fortress, the 'Saxon Bastille', is a hilltop fortress near Dresden, in Saxon Switzerland, Germany, above the town of Königstein on the left bank of the River Elbe. It is one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe and sits atop the table hill of the same name. Set of figure studies, designed for amateurs to study, after Sébastien le Clerc, the Elder (1637-1714). Le Clerc was a prolific engraver and draughtsman who succeeded Claude Mellan as engraver to the king of France, working in a style derived from Jacques Callot. Bound with another, incomplete set of figure studies after Callot and others, including two circus subjects. One of these bears the legend 'June 1727 the Italian Flyer, Flew so from ye top pf ye steeple of St Martins Church into the Meuse, ye Torches he used when he Flew from ye upper Gallery to ye emd of ye Stage'!

A portrait of doctor and traveller Richard Robert Madden (1798-1806) dressed in Syrian costume. He is shown taking the pulse of a woman who demurely extends her arm through a nearly-closed door. This portrait is the frontispiece to Madden's first volume of his 'Travels in Turkey, Egypt, Nubia and Palestine in 1824, 1825, 1826, 1827 and 1833' published in 1833. As a physician, Madden was permitted into areas of the cities in which he travelled which were usually out of bounds for a westerner. This was a benefit he seems to have made much use of for he writes 'I have attended for many months past, on the hareems of all classes; and even in the humblest I have found no dearth of either luxury or loveliness...my skill and patience was exercised on all the ladies, though in reality, only one required assistance.'

A view of the Palamide, Napoli di Romania, which was the capital of the Morea during the Venetian rule. The town of Nafplio, the seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece. The Venetians retook Nafplio in 1685 and strengthened the city by building the castle of Palamidi, which was the last major construction of the Venetian empire overseas. It was however defended by few soldiers and was easily retaken by the Ottomans in 1715.

On the return journey the Alceste hit a reef in the Java Sea and was wrecked, after which the crew had to cope with Malay Dyak pirates who burned the ship and surrounded their camp.
