Sir Robert Stawell Ball (1840-1913) was an Irish astronomer who worked for Lord Rosse from 1865 for two years. In 1867 he became Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Royal College of Science in Dublin and in 1874 he was appointed Royal Astronomer of Ireland and Andrews Professor of Astronomy in the University of Dublin at Dunsink Observatory. He also published books on mathematical astronomy such as "A Treatise on Spherical Astronomy". In 1892 he was appointed Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge University and also accepted the post as Director of the Cambridge Observatory.

Eugène Henri Brisson (1835-1912) was a French statesman, Prime Minister of France for a period in 1885 until 1886 and again in 1898. He was a member of the extreme Left, he did however propose amnesty for the condemned but it was voted down. He was also a prominent figure in exposing the Panama scandals. In June of 1898 he formed a cabinet when the country was violently excited over the Dreyfus affair. The Dreyfus affair was a political scandal that divided France in the 1890s and the early 1900s. It involved the conviction for treason of Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a French artillery officer of Alsatian Jewish descent, who was sentenced to life for allegedly having communicated French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris.

Elizabeth Hamilton [née Gunning], duchess of Hamilton and Brandon (1733-90), courtier. She first met James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Argyll, at a party in January 1752 and they married the following month at a chapel in Curzon Street, Mayfair. The duke had forgotten to bring a ring so married her with a bed-curtain ring fetched from his house. The duke brought Elizabeth back to Scotland where, dividing their time between Edinburgh and Hamilton, they were at the centre of Scottish society. The duke died in 1758 after catching a chill while out hunting and Elizabeth remarried the following year, to 'Handsome Jack Campbell' (1723-1806), a professional soldier. When George III married Princess Charlotte in 1761, Elizabeth was chosen as one of the ladies of the bedchamber, and became a figure of real significance in the household of Queen Charlotte. Engraving after a portrait by Francis Cotes (and copied in reverse from an earlier print from the same portrait).

Full length portrait of Samuel Franklin Cowdery (1867 – 1913), known as Samuel Franklin Cody, USA born Wild West showman, early pioneer of manned flight and inventor of the Cody kite used by the British military. He was also the first man to fly an aeroplane built in Britain. His flight of 16 October 1908 is recognised as the first official flight of a piloted heavier-than-air machine in Great Britain. He set various British flight distance and endurance records and won prizes in flight competitions such as the Michelin Cup in 1911.

Sir Daniel Cooper (1821 - 1902), merchant and philanthropist who went to Sydney, Australia in 1843. Though he left for England in 1861 and never again resided permanently in New South Wales, he continued to serve the colony. He acted frequently as agent-general for New South Wales, attending to such matters as the negotiation and supervision of mail contracts, and occasionally rendering special services such as the inquiries which culminated in the selection in 1888 of Edward Eddy as chief commissioner for railways in New South Wales. In 1881 he was chairman of the London Committee of the Sydney International Exhibition and in 1886 sat on the royal commission for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London. He was associated with the Royal Colonial Institute, warmly advocated imperial federation and in 1880 published A Federal British Empire the Best Defence of the Mother Country and her Colonies. In 1857 Cooper was elected to the Senate of the University of Sydney and became a generous benefactor.

François du Quesnoy (1597-1643), sculptor and draughtsman, gesturing towards a small bust. Du Quesnoy moved to Rome in 1618 (he was a friend and housemate of Nicholas Poussin) and spent the rest of his life in Italy (earning the sobriquet 'il Fiammingo'- 'the Flemish'). Apparently after a portrait by Van Dyck, and published by the British engraver Richard Brookshaw when he was briefly resident in du Quesnoy's hometown of Brussels.

Full length portrait of the British aviator Gustav Wilhelm Hamel (1889 - 1914). He learned to fly at the Blériot school at Pau, France in 1910; after observing his first flight Louis Blériot commented that he had never seen a pilot with such natural ability. He paricipated in various competitions, flying displays and a pioneer in aviation; Hamel made the first cross-channel flight with a woman as passenger on 2nd April 1912, when he flew Eleanor Trehawke Davies from Hendon to Paris, he also enabled her to be the first woman to experience looping the loop on 2nd January 1914. Hamel disapeared over the English Channel on 23rd May 1914, it was speculated that this was sabotage but there was no trace of the aircraft and a fishing vessel on 6th July 1914 found a body that matched the description of Hamel.

He was also the first editor of Golf Monthly, an editor of Golf Illustrated and a course designer (for example Ferndown Golf Club in Dorset). Hewas inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1978.

By 1840 Thomas Jennings Wigney had succeeded his father as landlord of the "George" Hotel, which appeared to be a strange move, for Thomas was a surgeon and had been working at the Huddersfield and Upper Agbrigg Infirmary and also had pursued a private practice in the town. Henrick Ibsen (1828-1906) was a Norwegian playwright, theatre director and poet. He is often referred to as "the father" of the modern theatre and was one of the founders of Modernism in the theatre. His play "The Master Builder" of 1892 was one of Ibsen's most significant and revealing works, which explored more psychological conflicts that transcended a simple rejection of current conventions.

A endowment policy for Sir Archibald John Primrose (1783-1868), MP, then 4th Earl of Rosebery from 1814, appointed to the Privy Council in 1831. It relates to his divorce from Harriett Bouverie on the grounds of her adultery with Sir Henry St. John Carew St. John-Mildmay. A high-profile court case ended with Primrose being awarded £15,000 damages from Mildmay (at a time when the norm was nearer £3,000). This agreement was to ensure the continued payment of the money owed. As it is unsigned and there is much deletion of the printed text this would be a draft of the final agreement. The Westminster Society for Insurance of Lives and Survivorships was established in 1792, the first proprietary life office. It was amalgamated with the Guardian Assurance Company in 1863.

Paris was the son of Priam, king of Troy, and appears in a number of Greek legends. He awards the Apple of Discord to the goddess Aphrodite, choosing her as winner in a contest of beauty also involving Hera and Athena. By Richard Brookshaw (1736 - c. 1804), mezzotinter and draughtsman. He worked in London, Paris (from 1773), Brussels and Amsterdam (1779).

(Joseph) Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936), writer and poet. Born in Bombay, he was educated in England but returned to India and worked for Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore. His many publications include Plain Tales from the Hills, 1887, The Jungle Book, 1894, and Kim, 1901. He is unequalled as an observer of the Raj and as a commentator on the duties and obligations of empire. Later in life he settled in Sussex, from which he drew the inspiration for Puck of Pook's Hill, 1906, and Rewards and Fairies, 1910, as well as some of his finest late stories. Long out of favour because of the imperial themes in his work, he is now recognized as one of the major talents of his time. Stamped 'Specimen' upper right.

Head and shoulders portrait of the future Louis XVIII, within an oval frame with coat of arms below. Louis XVIII (Louis Stanislas Xavier 1755–1824), known as “the Desired,” was King of France from 1814 to 1824, except for a brief interruption during the Hundred Days. Before ascending the throne, he spent 23 years in exile from 1791 during the French Revolution and the First French Empire.
