Portrait of Sir James Rivett Carnac, 1st Bt (1785 - 1846), Governor of Bombay, India. Bombay-born Carnac joined the East India Company in 1801 as a Cadet in the Madras Native Infantry. In 1802 he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Governor of Bombay and spent the next seventeen years working for the British administration in India. In 1822 he retired from the Indian service and went to England. In 1827 he was elected as Director of the East India Company, and from 1835 to 1838 served first as Deputy Chairman and then as Chairman. He became a Whig MP in 1837, but was offered the Governorship of Bombay soon after and resigned his seat the following year. He arrived in Bombay in 1839. However, less than two years into his post, his health faltered and in 1841 he resigned and left India for good.
