Scene from the 'Carnaval de Parnasse', a ballet composed by Fuzelier and Mondonville. It was issued as a pair to 'La Guinguette', depicting a scene from the pantomime of that name by created by de Hesse.

Engraving, platemark 340 x 420mm (13½ x 16½"). Very large margins. Water staining to edges.
Men playing cards and smoking in a tavern, after the Dutch painter of genre scenes David Teniers (1610-90). Engraved by François Basan (1723-97), an engraver by training who from the mid 1750s on concentrated on publishing and dealing. He also succeeded the great Mariette as the major Parisian print expert, and authored a standard 'Dictionnaire des Graveurs anciens et modernes' (1767, 2nd ed.1789).

Interior with a man seated at a table, absorbed in reading a book by the light of a window; more books, an ink pot and quill pen, alongside a human skull and assorted vessels, on the table in front of him. After David Teniers the Younger (1610 - 1690) 'in the style of Rembrandt'.

A concubine presenting a pipe to a sultan, both seated under a baldaquin. An odalisque prepares coffee on a brazier. Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720-1778), became painter and draftsman to the Louis XV and drawing-master to Madame de Pompadour. Pierre-François Basan (1723-1797), engraver, printseller and publisher of a 'Dictionnaire des Graveurs' in 1767.

A Dutch lady at her toilet, standing in the middle of her bedroom, wearing a nightcap and fur-trimmed jacket, stretching her hand out towards her lap-dog, which is standing on its hind legs. Plate 18 from 'Recueil d'estampes gravées d'après les tableaux de la galerie de S. E. M. le Comte de Brühl', a pair to 'le déjeuner hollandois'. The original painting, from c.1660, is in the Hermitage.

Fine Italian landscape after Joseph Vernet (1714-89). In 1734 Vernet's patron Joseph de Seytres, Marquis de Caumont offered to sponsor Vernet to travel to Italy, where he lived until returning to France in 1753. The larger part of Vernet's Italian output consists of imaginary landscapes, either of pastoral landscapes such as this or coastal scenes of either calm or stormy water.

Pegasus flaps his wings. On the right nereids put coral on Perseus' shield. The body of the sea monster can be seen on the right. BM: 1873,0712.297.
