Cleopatra VII (69 BC-30 BC), Egyptian Queen, lover of Julius Caesar and later the wife of Mark Antony. After the Roman armies of Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus) defeated their combined forces, Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide, and Egypt fell under Roman domination. Rather than be dragged through the city in which she had been borne as a queen, she killed herself, possibly by means of an asp, symbol of divine royalty. From "Raccolta Di Statue Antiche E Moderne".

To punish her, he transformed her into a sunflower so that she would always face towards him in his daily journey across the skies.

Marie-Theodore Thérèse Ruggieri, was known as Mlle. Colombe being employed by the Comedie Italienne at an earlier time than her older sister. Marie-Catherine (1751-1830), Marie-Thérèse (1754-1837) and Marie-Madeleine Riggieri (1760-1841), known as Adeline, were among the most celebrated demi-mondaines of their era. Under the stage name 'Colombe', the beautiful (and notorious) Venetian-born actresses made a sensation in late eighteenth-century Paris. Jean Baptiste Patas french printmaker 1748 - 1817 may also be Charles Emmanuel Patas. This prints may be based on a composition by Fragonard who painted the famous actresses.

A river scene with a bridge leading to a ruined keep, from a painting by Giacomo Cortese (1621-75), known as Il Borgognone, a Frenchman who spent his career in Italy, with an output mainly of battle scenes. The original painting belonged to Peter Delmé (1710-70), a wealthy English merchant, MP for Ludgershall 1734-41 and for Southampton 1741-54. He was nicknamed 'Peter the Czar' for his considerable inherited wealth, but he spent the lot before shooting himself in his house in Grosvenor Square.

A scene of the Duke of Berwick accepting the surrender of the Austrian-English-Dutch army after the Battle of Almansa, 25 April 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession. James FitzJames (1670-1734) was the illegitimate son of James II by Arabella Churchill, born and raised in France. In 1687 his father made him Duke of Berwick and Governor of Portsmouth, although the Glorious Revolution prevented him taking up the post, joining his father in exile. After the Battle of the Boyne he joined the French army and showed similar abilities to his uncle, the Duke of Marlborough. His victory at Almansa was described by Frederick the Great as the most impressive battle of the century. Berwick was decapitated by a cannonball at the Siege of Philippsburg in 1734. Pierre-Louis Dubus (1721-99), French comic actor known as simply 'Préville'. As the text on the print recounts, he joined the Comédie Francaise in 1753 in the role of Crispin in Jean-François Regnard's 'Le Légitaire Universel'. Admired by Louis XV and a friend of the greatest British actor of the day, David Garrick (who christened him 'enfant de la nature'), he created more than sixty roles during his time at the Comédie Francaise (1753-86). Portrayed here in decorative frame with symbols of the arts and scene from another play by Regnard, 'Les Folies Amoureuses'.

The royal Tuileries Palace stood on the right bank of the River Seine until 1871. In the eighteenth century it was used as a theatre, and its gardens became a fashionable resort of Parisians. The couple in this print are watched by their pet dog. Engraved by Jean Baptiste Simonet (1742 - 1810) after a gouache painting by Pierre Antoine Baudouin (1723 - 1769) who worked in Boucher's studio and married his daughter.

Susanna accused by the elders. A classical setting Susanna, standing with her arms outstretched in the centre. The two elders pointing at her with crowds surrounding them, with many people expressing grief. Susannah was a biblical figure, a virtuous woman who refused the advances of two elders. In revenge she was brought to trial and condemned to death, but rescued by Daniel, sent from God. Lettered below with titles and a dedication to Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, Regent of France. After French historical painter Antoine Coypel (1661 - 1722).
