Interesting collection of late 19th century topographical and martime subjects including the Great Falls of the Passaic River (Paterson, New Jersey), a view of the Hudson river from Newburgh, the South Battery on Governor's Island in New York, Turnabout Island (Kiushan Tao) east of China, gold digging near Yantai in China, and Torre Abbey Sands near Torquay in England, along with ships including one sailing from New York to England. Signatures on some of the works suggest they may all have been by members of the Walter family.

Dramatic early pen lithograph. The new medium allowed artists to draw directly onto a prepared stone, allowing them to make prints which arguably resembled drawings more than any earlier printmaking technique. Unlike many printmaking techniques, lithography required no special training as artists could work directly onto the plate and leave specialist printers to actually make the prints. For this reason many artists who were not trained printmakers (such as Géricault and Delacroix) often worked in lithography.

Beaudesert, Staffordshire, Marquis of Anglesea

Beaudesert, on the southern edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, one of the family seats of the Paget family. The estate was broken up in the early 20th century, and demolition of the house began in 1935, but was never completed and some ruins still remain. Plate from Humphry Repton's 'Fragments on the theory and practice of Landscape Gardening', whose plates were engraved from drawings by the great landscape gardener. Repton's last treatise, 'Fragments' charts the break-up of landscape gardening and the society which sustained it, focusing on small flower gardens and ornate gothic buildings rather than the landscape at large. Repton died two years later, in 1818.

Bleeding Neptune or a Scotch Experiment !!

Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville bleeds Neptune from his forearm, while Alexander Trotter collects the guineas spouting from his left arm. Melville, the first lord of the Admiralty, and Trotter, paymaster of the navy, were investigated for financial irregularities in their management of the navy. When the commission's report came out in March 1805 (shortly before the Isaac Cruikshank print which this etching copies), Melville was cleared of lining his own pockets, while Trotter's financial speculations were in fact successful and standard practice amongst civil servants of the day.

[The Mineral Water lunch of Count Cagliostro] Le Dejeune avec les Eau Minerale du Comte Cagliastro

Satire on the infamous Count Alessandro di Cagliostro (1743-95), adventurer, freemason, charlatan, radical politician and occultist. Cagliostro sits at ease while numerous figures around him sleep or vomit. Cagliostro's life is shrouded in mystery but involved forging and swindling of various kinds (and alleged involvement in the 'Affair of the Diamond Necklace' in which Marie Antoinette was thought to have defrauded the crown jewellers of the cost of an expensive necklace). He travelled around Europe, including time spent in London, and died in prison in Rome after he had been sentenced to life for being a Freemason. The error-strewn French and style of this print suggests it may have been made in Italy. Since his death, Cagliostro has been of tremendous cultural interest. He has been the subject of literary works by Goethe and Tolstoy amongst others.

In 1721 the novelist and translator Penelope Aubin (1679?-1738), who introduced the English to various French texts, edited 'Doctrine of Morality … According to the Stoick Philosophy' (1721), Thomas Mannington Gibbs's translation of the work by Marin le Roy, sieur de Gomberville. This was republished in 1726 as 'Moral Virtue Delineated', with a frontispiece by Aubin, from which this is the frontispiece.

The true portraiture of Iudge Littleton the Famous English Lawyer.

Thomas Littleton (1417-1481), justice and legal writer. His celebrated treatise on tenures was printed anonymously within a year of his death, making it the first law book printed in England, and the most successful (going through more than ninety editions). Frontispiece to the 1684 edition of Sir Edward Coke's commentary on Littleton ("The First Part of the Institutes of the Lawes of England. Or, A Commentarie upon Littleton, not the name of a lawyer onely, but of the law it selfe"), copying the Robert Vaughan engraving used in the first 1628 edition. Vaughan's engraving was itself probably copied from a portrait formerly in the windows of Frankley church, where Littleton founded a chapel.

Very scarce lithograph backed onto linen, varnished; sheet 435 x 555mm (17 x 21¾").
Keyplate made to accompany the engraving of the painting by Frederick Christian Lewis junior's (1813-75) of the installation of the nawab of the Carnatic, Ghulam Muhammad Ghaus Khan, at Chenauk Palace by Lord Elphinstone on 25 August 1842. The huge (6ft x 7½ft) painting, now in the Fort Museum in Madras, included between sixty and seventy portraits and took Lewis eighteen months to complete. The principal Indians and English are seated to left and right of the nawab, seated on the Musnud, and among the high ranking officials depicted, from all departments of the colonial administration, are Lord Elphinstone, Governor of Madras, General Sir Robert Clark, Commander-in-Chief, Sir Edward Gambier, Chief Justice, members of the judicial bench, the Board of Revenue, gentleman agents and residents, and local Indian princes and potentates. The keyplate notes some figures are not identified by name and that they were members of the Nabob retinue and Durbar. Lewis (often called 'Indian Lewis' to distinguish him from his artist father and brother), was one of the foremost British artists working in Asia in the ninenteenth century.

The Cathedral of Málaga, engraved from a drawing by Francis Carter (1741?-1783) and published in his two-volume 'A Journey from Gibraltar to Malaga' (1777). Carter, a traveller and collector of coins, was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries that same year, but died before completing his next work, a study of early Spanish printed books.

Collection of naval watercolours and related material, including two detailed and carefully described views of the Battle of Trafalgar, both dated to 1805, the year of the battle. In the first Nelson's ship the HMS Victory is in the centre 'after breaking the line', flanked by the Temeraire and the French ships Redoutable, Fougueux and Bucentaure (all of which were captured by the British). The second shows the Conqueror and Neptune engaging the Bucentaur, and Santísima Trinidad. Most of the vessels and locations in other watercolours are unidentified.

William George Maton (1774-1835), physician. Educated at Oxford, Maton had a long association with the College of Surgeons and was physician to Westminster Hospital in 1800-08. He also took an interest in botany (a woodpecker, shellfish and genus of plants were named after him) and published several volumes of antiquarian studies focusing on the history of southern England. It was through his botanical knowledge that he was introduced to the royal family (in Weymouth at the same time as them, he was identified as the person to identify a botanical specimen one of the princesses had obtained). He subsequently was appointed physician-extraordinary to Queen Charlotte and physician-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria. Vice President Linnean Society of London. Frontis to J.A. A prostitute (identifiable from the pockmarks on her face) sits with her foot in the stocks. A child stood nearby chides her for the shortcomings of her night rail (a loose garment worn by both). The verses below explain that it is this deception which has landed her in the stocks. The final line of the verses advises that 'Chalk and Chees are not the same', and both can be found on a plate on the far left. Rare early satire.

French rendering of the familiar subject of William Penn's (1644 - 1718) 'Great Treaty' reputedly signed with Delaware Indian leaders in 1682 under an ancient elm tree at the village of Shackamaxon, located in what are now the borders of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here the legend is rather different to in British engravings: 'Penn buys from the savages the land he wants to occupy'.

Reversed design advertising Allsopps Patent Pale Ale, with illustrations of putti 'picking', 'brewing', 'drinking' and 'exporting'. The profile heads representing the four continents atest to the global reach of the company. Samuel Allsop and Sons, brewing giants of Burton-on-Trent, exported pale ale to India fom 1822 and became a spectacularly successful Victorian firm (the world's third largest brewery in the 1870s). A label attached to the backing sheet reads 'W.T. Copeland. Seen on a change-well for a shop or public house counter', suggesting the involvement of pottery manufacturer William Taylor Copeland (1797-1868) and possibly linking the design to use on ceramics. The image could have been printed onto transfer paper and then onto ceramics, reversing the image again so it reads the right way around.

Schloß Klessheim, a baroque palace near Salzburg designed by Austrian architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach in 1700 for Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernest von Thun. It was originally named 'Lustschloss Favorita', a title mentioned on the text beneath the image. The palace became summer residence for the Archbishops of Salzburg, but was not completed until 1732 (after this print was made), by which time the original design had been scaled down. The twin structures in the foreground of this print appear never to have been built. Since 1993 the palace has been the Salzburg Casino. Plate from Fischer's 'Entwurf einer historischen Architektur' ('Outline of Historical Architecture', first published 1721), the first comparative architecture of all periods and nations.

The baroque Kollegienkirche, designed by Austrian architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach. It was commissioned in 1694 by Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun, to serve the city's university. Mozart was born in January 1756 and lived in a house nearby with two clocks on clock tower. Plate from Fischer's 'Entwurf einer historischen Architektur' ('Outline of Historical Architecture', first published 1721) , the first comparative architecture of all periods and nations.

As opposed to the situation 'Three Weeks after Marriage' (see ref. 36224) which depicts only a tense situation, here it has become violent, with the husband attempting to defend himself not only from his wife but also the terrier biting at his clothes. An overturned table sends plates and cutlery across the floor.
