The Tea Tax Tempest, or the Anglo-American Revolution.
[Carl Gottlieb Guttenberg.]
[n.d., c.1778.]
Etching, scarce scratched letter proof. Platemark: 405 x 485mm (16 x 19"), with large margins. Light foxing in margins. Small spot of repaired damage in lower right title area.
Famous American Revolution satire, in which a figure of Time uses a magic lantern to project an allegorical representation of revolution in America, showing the consequences of the Stamp Act and the tax on tea, watched by an audience personifying the four continents. In the title area, two medallions depicting Holland and Switzerland as precursors of the American struggle in their own experiences of oppression. One (left) is inscribed "Auto da fe" and "Holland. 1560". It represents a man tied to the stake, while a monk, holding up a crucifix, holds a torch to the pile. On the right. is "Wilhelm Tell, Switzerland. 1296". Legendary Swiss patriot William Tell aims with a cross-bow at the apple on his son's head, while Austrian bailiff Gessler on horseback points at the child. Between the medallions is part of an oak-tree. The medallion representing Holland is supported (left) by the Dutch lion holding in his paw a sheaf of seven arrows representing the United Provinces. Hercules with his club (right) supports the medallion of Switzerland. An adaptation, in reverse, of 'The Oracle' by John Dixon. Engraved and published in Nuremberg by Carl Gottlieb Guttenberg (1743 - 1790). BM Satires: 5490.

A charm for a democracy, reviewed, analysed & destroyed Jany 1st 1799 to the confusion of its affiliated friends.
[After Thomas Rowlandson]
Publish'd February 1st 1799 by [Wright's name erased] for the Anti Jacobin Review. by J Whittle Peterborough Court Fleet Street.
Etching with fine hand colour. Sheet 305 x 460mm (12¼ x 18"). Trimmed within plate. Vertical crease as normal in centre where previously folded.
Satirical illustration from the ‘Anti-Jacobin Review’ (vol. ii, frontispiece) depicts a chaotic, hellish scene titled the Cave of Despair, where radical political figures are shown as demonic conspirators. A divine light from above drives away evil, symbolizing divine intervention against revolution and sedition. Three robed figures (wizards) prepare a grotesque potion in a cauldron inscribed with names and symbols of rebellion, such as Kosciuszko’s blade (1746-1817) and Fox’s (1749-1806) fur, while the Devil and a monster watch approvingly. Pamphlets promoting radical ideas like atheism, sedition, and insurrection fuel the flames beneath the cauldron, added by figures like Horne Tooke (1736-1812). A grim procession of opposition politicians, including Fox, Erskine (1750-1823), Tierney (1761-1830), and Thelwall (1764-1834), file into the cave, each uttering phrases of regret or defiance. Above them, the King (1738-1820) and ministers like Pitt (1759-1806) and Grenville (1759-1834) appear in divine light, symbolizing order and justice. Meanwhile, defeated demons including Robespierre (1758-94) and Voltaire (1694-1778) flee, and an ape dressed as a newsboy (symbolizing the radical press) sounds his horn, spreading seditious ideas. The scene is a visual condemnation of revolutionary ideology, radical journalism, and political opposition, portraying them as part of a satanic conspiracy against Britain. BM Satires 9345.

Plate from the 'Satirist', x. 1. Robert (‘Romeo’) Coates lies with closed eyes on an ornate sofa, holding a cock standing on his stomach. He wears the quasi-Spanish or sixteenth-century costume conventional in the theatre, with tasselled Hessian boots; the sofa is decorated with cocks’ heads. Visions of his dramatic ambitions surround him. Coates repeats Romeo’s words from Shakespeare: “O heavy lightness! serious vanity. Mis-shapen chaos of well seeming forms!” Behind him, Shakespeare rises from the floor, asking, “Oh Romeo! Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?” To the right, a cock with Coates’s head and arm stands on clouds, offering his purse to the Apothecary, who has a cock’s head, and declaring, “Come hither Man I see that thou are poor. Hold, there's forty Ducats.” A further vision shows Coates in armour, with a cock’s head, striding across the clouds and pointing ahead. On the floor lie symbols of his theatrical aspirations: his feathered, jewelled hat, sword with a cock-shaped hilt, and a jewel on a chain. Tragedy and Comedy appear as two cocks: Tragedy is crowned, holding a dagger in its beak and a cup of poison in its claw, while Comedy carries a comic mask. The print refers to Coates’s appearance as Lothario in Nicholas Rowe’s The Fair Penitent at the Haymarket, a subject discussed in a review of Antony Pasquin’s, 'The Dramatic Censor' in the 'Satirist'. The Glorious Verdict of Cold Bath Fields; or, a Hard Pull for Justice. The Political Drama. No.7.
Printed and Published by G. Drake, 12, Houghton Street, Clare Market [c.1833]
Wood-engraving, sheet 280 x 440mm (11 x 17¼"). Creases and staining; holes; Centre crease as normal..
On 13 May 1833 young radicals clashed with police in the Coldbath Fields Riots in Clerkenwell, London during protests against the 1832 Reform Act (which, the demonstrators argued, didn't go far enough). Three policemen were stabbed during the clashes, one of whom later died, and in an inquest into the death, a jury of local shopkeepers and householders returned a verdict of Justifiable Homicide, arguing that the violence was provoked by the police's aggressive handling of the protest. In this print the jury (on the left) are involved in a tug-of-war against politicians, a judge- and the devil. Woodcut satire from 'The Political Drama', a series of 131 satires produced between 1833 and 1835 by Charles Jameson Grant (1830-52, fl.).

Allegorical frontispiece to John Nalson's, "A True Copy of the Journal of the High Court of Justice for the Tryal of King Charles I." satire representing the Interregnum, with Oliver Cromwell depicted in armour and with wolf-like limbs, riding in a chariot drawn by two flame-breathing griffins and driven by a female devil. On his sword is a pair of scales in which feathers labelled ‘Liberty’ outweigh the crown, church, sceptre and orb. At his feet kneel three crowned, manacled women representing England, Scotland and Ireland, while Cromwell seizes England’s crown and a small devil holds the Commonwealth coat of arms. Beneath the chariot wheels lie the bodies of Charles I and Justice.
