Annotated in graphite by Samuel's son 'finished state' and signed 'Samuel Palmer.' A.H.P. Private Press refers to the personal printing press operated by A. H. Palmer (Alfred Herbert Palmer), the son of the celebrated 19th-century British landscape painter and etcher Samuel Palmer.

Arlecchino painting the portrait of a woman, holding a paint brush and a very large pot. The result is caricatured, giving her a beard. One of a famous series of 'Harlequinades' depicting characters from Commedia dell'Arte by Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (1692-1768). A version of this scene was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi while he was still in Italy (BM 1891,0511.54).

The Sicilian tyrant Phalaris (ruled c. 570 to c. 554) being roasted alive in a hollow bronze bull. Designed by Phalaris himself, the screams of the victim were amplified to sound like the bellows of a bull. The frontispiece to 'Phalaridos akragantinon tyrannou epistolai' (first edition 1695, second 1718), said to be the letters of Phalaris, but written in the 2nd century AD.

A idealised work house, designed by landscape gardener Humphry Repton to replace a "wretched building'' in a Kentish parish (the name is redacted in the text). The building is raised to prevent the damp conditions of the existing building, with a sun-lit terrace for the residents. Children either work a vegetable patch or are drilled by an army veteran .Produce is sold to passers-by. Published in Repton's 'Fragments on the theory and practice of Landscape Gardening'. Repton (1752-1818) was the last great English garden designer of the C18th, but the first to use the phrase 'landscape gardener'. Regarded as the successor to Capability Brown, he worked at Blaise Castle, Woburn Abbey, Stoneleigh Abbey & the central gardens in Russell Square, but lost out on the Prince Regent's Brighton Pavilion to John Nash (although he published his designs).
