A cobbler brandishes a strap as his diminutive wife, dressed in Turkish trousers and a jewelled turban, flees behind him. To the left is his workshop, with a bench and tools, while a large quasi-oriental building with a minaret and dome stands in the background. The accompanying verses recount how the cobbler beat his tiny wife, who fled between his legs, declaring that she had gone ‘for ever’. As performed by Charles Mathews (1776–1835) which premiered on April 8, 1806, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London.

Proof tinted lithograph on chine collé with fine hand colour, on printed backing sheet. Total 615 x 470mm (24¼ x 18½"). Backing sheet toned, small crack in left edge.
One of the finest ballet prints, depicting the four greatest ballerinas of the age in a ballet divertissement choreographed by Jules Perrot to music by Cesare Pugni. Each ballerina had an individual variation choreographed specifically for them, performed in succession between an opening and finale danced by all the ballerinas together. To assuage the quartet's rivalry, the ballerinas appeared on stage in order of age, youngest to oldest. This performance, the third of only four danced by the original ballerinas, was attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

His younger brother, Stephen Herbert Gatty (1849-1922, owner of this music book, was a barrister who served as Chief Justice of Gibraltar from 1895 to 1905, and was the father-in-law of Siegfried Sassoon.
