On December 1, 1793, the British packet ship Antelope was passing by Cuba on her way home to England from Jamaica, when she was engaged by two French schooners, one of which was L'Atalante (probably an old American privateer which passed into French hands at the end of the war for American independence). L'Atalante gave chase alone after the Antelope bore up for Jamaica, and caught up the following day. The Atalante grappled the Antelope and its crew tried to board the British ship, but was repulsed and, in the ensuing battle, the Antelope took possession of its opponent.

A Paris, chez Martinet, Libraire, Rue du Coq. [n.d., c.1814.]

One lady uses a tall parasol as a walking-stick, and is plainly dressed, wearing an odd straw bonnet, a frill encircling her neck and shoulders. The other has a more elaborate and longer gown, with a festooned flounce. Her hat is a small fluted plateau with ribbon or lace tied under the chin. Walking towards them (from left) are a civilian with a lady whose small bonnet is covered with a long lace scarf falling well below the waist. She wears a tunic dress, the edge vandyked, over a plain skirt. Her companion wears long gaiters. The centre figure is a very tall young man who drifts along (right to left) with his arms folded behind him. He wears trousers strapped under his boots. Both civilians wear the usual flowerpot hat, and coat with long tails. In the background is a lake. From a series of 30 plates satirizing fashions observed in Paris by Aaron Martinet (1762 - 1841).

Physical Aid,-or-Britannia recover'd from a trance;-also, the patriotic courage of Sherry Andrew: & a peep thro' the Fog.
[James Gillray.]
Publd. March 14th 1803, by H. Humphrey, 27 St James's Street.
Hand coloured etching, 265 x 365mm (10½ x 14½"). Thread margins. Very light foxing and staining.
Britannia, terrified, faint, and dishevelled sits on the ground supported by Addington (Prime Minister, succeeding Pitt, in 1801) and Hawkesbury, and defended by Sheridan, a Silenus-like and ragged Harlequin. The scene is a parody of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. The figures are arranged on the coast towards which are advancing many rowing boats filled with little French soldiers. Napoleon stands with drawn sword in the foremost boat, a tiny figure with a large head and no body, to show that he is Nobody. The distant French coast (right) is covered with troops marching towards the shore. In the foreground lies a long torn scroll, headed 'Treaty of Peace'. After James Gillray (1756 - 1815).
