Pair of mixed method engravings, proofs before all letters with colour wash. Sheets 485 x 570mm (19 x 22½"), 1st on Whatman laid paper, 2nd with large 18th century watermark. Creasing and slight staining. Cut inside platemark.
Two well-executed sketches, with the titles and inscriptions of the smaller etchings published by James Bretherton in 1787. The first shows the Count lying on a bed, attended by his fiancée M.lle de Benskow, her mother and her brother, as a boy brings soup for the dying man. The second shows a young man being captured by soldiers as a pair of monks watch, a scene from Claudine Guérin de Tencin's tragedy ''Les Amants malheureux ou Le Comte de Comminges'', adapted for the stage by Baculard d'Arnaud.

A view of the trial of William Laud (1573-1645), Archbishop of Canterbury, on charges of treason. Of interest is the depiction of the tapestries of the defeat of the Spanish Armada, burnt in the fire of 1634. This second state, with Hollar's name added and the key extended K-T, was used in 'A Breviate of the Life of William Laud' in 1644 and 'Hidden Workes of Darkness' in 1645, both works by William Prynne. Pennington 555, ii of ii, but still with the key not used in later printings.

Pastiche of Stubbs' horse and lion subjects, issued as a companion to Robert Sayers' reprint of Stubbs' 'Lioness and Lion' by George Townley Stubbs. Lennox-Boyd (p.123) supposes that Collett's painting was commissioned by the publisher specifically with a view to being engraved as a pair for the Stubbs print. John Collet (c.1725-80) was a painter and prolific designer of predominantly humorous scenes for publishers to make prints from. See Lennox-Boyd p.23. Ex: collection of The Hon. The Death of Sydney. S.r Philip Sidney mortally wounded (the victorious) at the battle of Zutphen; being extremely thirsty, asked for water, but as he was going to drink it, he saw a poor wounded Soldier half expiring, casting up a wishful look to it; instantly without tasting it, he gave it to him, saying, here honest fellow take it, thy wants are greater than mine.

Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586), poet and courtier, was shot in the thigh fighting the Spanish at the Battle of Zutphen (22nd September 1586), dying of gangrene three weeks later. Interred in the Old St. Paul's Cathedral, his grave was lost in the Great Fire of 1666.
