A half-length portrait in oval of Sir Robert Fletcher (c.1738-76) in uniform. A lieutenant the East India Company, he was cashiered for insolence, but was restored in time to serve in the Seven Years's War, leading to a promotion to captain and a knighthood for gallantry in action. However in 1766 he was court-martialled and cashiered again by Robert Clive for his involvement in the Monghyr Mutiny. He returned to England, became MP for Cricklade and campaigned for reinstatement to the the E.I.C. again, which he achieved in 1769, with a promotion to colonel. In 1772 he assumed command of the Madras Army, but came into conflict with the local E.I.C. governor, leaving India again in 1773. As an MP he called for an inquiry into the business of the East India Company; soon after the Company re-engaged his services, promoting him to brigadier-general in Madras, and he withdrew from the 1774 General Election. Back in India again he clashed with a different governor of Madras, Lord Pigot but, ill with tuberculosis, Fletcher left India, dying on Mauritius. CS 23, iii of iii. Ex: Collection of The Hon. Reginald Heber (1783-1826) was the Church of England's second Bishop of Calcutta. His missionary hymn 'From Greenland's Icy Mountains', written in 1819 for a service in aid of the 'Society for the Propagation of the Gospel' in Wrexham, was widely sung until recently, but lost favour when it was denounced by John Betjeman and Gandhi as patronising, particularly the line ''the heathen in his blindness [bowing] down to wood and stone''. A three-quarter portrait of Tory politician Robert Hobart (1760-1816), 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire. In 1794 he was appointed Governor of Madras, in which post he remained until 1798. He later served as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1801-4, as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1805 and 1812, Postmaster General 1806-7 and as President of the Board of Control from 1812 until his death in 1816. Because he gave Governor King instructions to found a settlement at Port Dalrymple, North Tasmania, the town was given the name Hobart. The plate was originally engraved by Joseph Grozer, but was reworked by Dunkarton when Hobart became earl. CS Grozer 13, ii of ii. Ex Collection: Norman Blackburn.

A portrait of Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935), better known by his initials and as 'Lawrence of Arabia'. Australian artist Hewitt Henry Rayner (1902-57) worked in Australia and New Zealand before studying at the Royal Academy where he was a pupil of Walter Sickert. Unable to afford copper plates or proper engraving equipment, Raynor used any type of metal he could get his hands on, such as oil containers and sweet tins (this plate is thin and cut irregularly) and tools such as second-hand dentists’ drill bits.

He served as the British resident to the Mughal court at Delhi. This is an early state, before the addition of John Boydell's publication line dated 1816. A head and shoulders portrait of author George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), books on a shelf behind. Australian artist Hewitt Henry Rayner (1902-57) worked in Australia and New Zealand before studying at the Royal Academy where he was a pupil of Walter Sickert. Unable to afford copper plates or proper engraving equipment, Raynor used any type of metal he could get his hands on, such as oil containers and sweet tins and tools such as second-hand dentists’ drill bits.

Half-length portrait on oval of John Stacpoole (c.1674-1771), issued posthumously. Underneath is engraved text paying tribute to his philanthropy, which went alongside his acquiring 'one of the Largest and best Circumstanced Estates in Ireland'. Engraved by James Watson after the Irish portrait painter Jeremiah 'Jerry' Barrett (c.1723-70). Watson also engraved a portrait of Richard Stacpoole which states that the 'Stacpooles of the County of Clare' such as John Stacpoole are descended from him. Both appear to have been issued as private plates for the Stacpoole family and their acquaintances. Whitman 84; CS 133; for Watson's portrait of Richard Stacpoole see ref. 37927.
