A half length portrait of Thomas Bell (1792-1880). Bell was a notable zoologist, specialising in reptile specimens. He was instrumental in the publication of Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and is commemorated in the names of several species and sub-species of reptile. From the Ipswich Museum Portraits series published by George Ransom in 1852, the sixty portraits of distinguished men of science were designed to commemorate the foundation of the museum in 1846.

A view of the animal cages at Mr Jamrach's repository on St George's Street (the Ratcliffe Highway), with a keeper and a customer. In the cages are kangaroos, emus and an owl. The wood-engraving comes from the Illustrated London News of February 19th, 1887, with additional details, including a boy, camels, an elephant (on top of a cage, so probably stuffed) and some skulls. Charles Jamrach (Johann Christian Carl Jamrach, 1815-91) took over the London branch of his father's animal business c.1840. In 1857 a Bengal tiger escaped from its box at the Emporium, snatching a small boy in the street; Jamrach used his bare hands and a crowbar borrowed from a bystander to rescue the boy (who sued Jamrach for £300).

Martin Hinrich Carl Lichtenstein (1780-1857) the German physician, explorer, botanist, zoologist and herpetologist. Between 1802 and 1806 he travelled in southern Africa, and was appointed personal physician to the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. In 1810 he published 'Reisen im sudlichen Afrika'. which gained the position of Professor of Zoology at the University of Berlin a year later, and 1813 he was appointed director of the Berlin Zoological Museum. He was responsible for the creation of Berlin's Zoological Gardens in 1841.

In 1767 he was invited by Catherine II of Russia to become professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and from 1768 to 1774 he led an expedition to central Russian provinces, collecting natural history specimens. He settled in St. Petersburg, becoming a favourite of Catherine II and teaching natural history to the Grand Dukes Alexander and Constantine. She gave him a large estate at Simferopol, where he lived until the death of his second wife. He was then granted permission to leave Russia by Emperor Alexander and he returned to Berlin. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

He wrote 'The Dodo and Its Kindred' in 1848, and edited Agassiz's 'Bibliographia Zoologie', which he holds in his left hand. The dodo is an extinct bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius. He died by accidently stepping into the path of a train while examining geological strata visible in cuttings on the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway.

Yarrell was a resepcted zoologist and his most acclaimed works 'The History of British Fishes' (1836) and 'A History of British Birds' (1843) were standard reference texts for a generation of British zoologists.
