A three quarter length portrait of geologist David Thomas Ansted (1814-1880). Ansted was appointed a follow of the Royal Society in 1844 and by 1850 had produced a number of seminal texts and manuals on practical geology. From the Ipswich Museum Portraits series published by George Ransom in 1852, the sixty portraits of distinguished men of science were designed to commemorate the foundation of the museum in 1846. American interest in Virginia.

A nearly-full length seated portrait of William Willoughby Cole (1807-86), Anglo-Irish Conservative MP and peer. A keen amateur palaeontologist, his collection of fossil fish was acquired by the British Museum, now transferred to the Natural History Museum. The original oil still resides at Florence Court, his estate at Enniskillen, now a National Trust property.

Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier (1777-1861) the French geologist and mineralogist, and a founder of the French Geological Society. He was professor of Geology at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris from 1819 until his death. He served as a scientist on Napoleon's expedition to Egypt from 1798 to 1799. Cordierite, a magnesium iron aluminium cycloscilicate, is named after him.

He was particularly interested in volcanism, fossils and stratigraphy. His main accomplishment was his scientific definition of the jurassic system.

A view of the town of Villanova, which was badly damaged by the Calabrian earthquakes of February and March 1793. Pompeo Schiantarelli (1746-1802/5), an architect, led a team from Neapolitan Academy of Science and Letters to record the devastation, which killed 35,000 people in the region. He also helped with the rebuilding efforts, planning two towns, Polistena and Mileto. Schianarellu published his account as 'Istoria de' fenomeni del tremoto avvenuto nelle Calabrie e nel Valdemone nell'anno 1783' (Account of the Effects of the Earthquake in Calabria in 1783). The plates are very similar in style to those in William Hamilton's study of volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei', 1776-9, also published in Naples.

Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1857) was a geologist. From 1823-1826 he was secretary of the Geological Society and later served as president. His highly influential Principles of Geology (1830-33) was an important source for Darwin's theories and went to many editions. He urged Darwin to publish 'Origin of Species', 1859, with Sir Joseph Hooker. He is considered the greatest geologist of his generation.

A mounted skeleton, with a man reaching up to touch the bottom of its ribcage. In 1801 a pit of fossilized mammoth bones was discovered on a farm in upstate New York. It was excavated by Charles Willson Peale, a naturalist and museum curator, with a team of twenty-five men to help him dig out the bones. The remains were transported to Philadelphia, where the sculptor William Rush modelled the missing bones in wood so the skeleton could be assembled. Peale then took the skeleton on the road, selling tickets to view it and even eat dinner within it, before returning it to Philadelphia and his museum of natural history there. When American president Thomas Jefferson sent the Lewis & Clark expedtion across North America in 1804 he hoped they would find a live mammoth, not realising they had been long extinct.

Sir Richard Owen (1804-1892), naturalist, comparative anatomist and palaeontologist. His right hand rests on a dinosaur skull. From the mid 1830s the leading British comparative anatomist; one of the most formidable opponents of evolutionary theories, which he disputed with Huxley. He was superintendent of the Natural History Department of the British Museum, and designed new natural history galleries at South Kensington. After Irish painter Henry Jones Thaddeus (1860-1929). A fellow of the Royal Geographical society, he often painted portraits on commission, including two for Pope Pius X. He wrote an autobiography, 'Recollections of a Court Painter', during his retirement in California (although he died on the Isle of Wight).

French explorers on Ascension Island, an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly midway between South America and Africa. One of the figures appears to be holding a portfolio and could be the expedition artist Louis Auguste de Sainson (1801 - 1887). The volcano is mentioned in Darwin's 'Voyage of the Beagle': the locals believed that an earthquake was caused by old women closing Antunco by witchcraft. One of sixteen lithographs after Eduard Friedrich Poeppig (1798-1868), published in his ' Reise in Chile, Peru und auf dem Amazonenstrome während der Jahre 1827-1832'. The work describes his zoological expedition to Chile, Peru and Brazil, in which he travelled the length of the Amazon, describing over 4,000 plant species and explored Incan ruins.
