The titlepage to 'Hortus Eystettensis' by Basilius Besler, published in 1613. The Bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, commissioned Besler to produce the work, which he compiled over sixteen years, although the bishop died before its completion. Besler had the assistance of his brother and a group of skilled German draughtsmen and engravers, including Sebastian Schedel, an accomplished painter, and Wolfgang Kilian, a skilled engraver from Augsburg. Kilian and his team engraved the initial copper plates, but after the bishop’s death, the operations moved to Nürnberg and a new team of engravers, among whom were Johannes Leypold, Georg Gärtner, Levin and Friedrich van Hulsen, Peter Isselburg, Heinrich Ulrich, Dominicus Custos and Servatius Raeven. Camerarius' nephew, Ludwig Jungermann (1572-1653), was a botanist and wrote most of the descriptive text.

He wrote 'Travels in the Interior of Southern Africa' (1824-4). His travels in Brazil from 1825 to 1830 resulted in another large collection, including more than 20,000 insects. When he killed himself in 1863 his plant specimens, drawings and manuscripts, both South African and Brazilian, were presented to Kew Gardens and the insects to Oxford University Museum.

This greenhouse was probably built when General Francis Augustus Eliott, 2nd Baron Heathfield (1750–1813) largely demolished the family home at Nutwell and built in its place a neo-classical house faced with tiles imitating Portland stone, an undertaking which he completed c.1800.

John Engelberts Liebenrood (1754-1821) was born in Germany in 1754. His birth name was John Engelberts Ziegenbein and he immigrated to England to live with his great uncle John George Liebenrood, a very wealthy merchant in Purley. When his uncle died in 1795 he inherited his fortune and in accordance with the will changed his name to Liebenrood.

The frontispiece includes portraits of the botanist Carolus Clusius (1526-1609) who played an important role in introducing the tulip to Western Europe, and his fellow botanist Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585). The book's plates were engraved by Crispijn de Passe junior (1589-1670), part of a famous printmaking family. The book consisted of two parts: the first comprised of some 175 illustrations of mostly bulbous and tuberous plants, and the second reproduced fruit, trees, and medicinal plants.
