An interior view of the Drury Lane theatre filled with an audience watching a performance in progress. The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, commonly known as Drury Lane, is the most recent in a line of four theatres which were built at the same location, the earliest of which dates back to 1663, making it the oldest theatre site in London. Published in Ackermann's famous work, the 'Microcosm of London', the figures were drawn by the famous caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson and the architecture by Augustus Pugin. Abbey, Scenery: 212.

Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, London. The name of the theatre changes with the sex of the monarch. The theatre was established by architect and playwright John Vanbrugh, in 1705, as the Queen's Theatre. It first became the King's Theatre in 1714 on the accession of George I. It was renamed Her Majesty's Theatre in 1837. After 1709, the theatre was devoted to Italian opera and was sometimes known informally as The Opera House. Numbered 'Plate III' upper right. A dancer in a glamourous version of the uniform of the Horse Guards. The costume was made for the Army and Navy ballet at London's Alhambra Theatre. An acted representation of the 'Grand Carnival', at the English Opera House (the Lyceum Theatre), with the pit and stage thrown together and crowded with revellers. The characters include a tiny Richard III, imitating Kean, a Puss in Boots, a man in armour, a nun (being chatted-up by Tom) Jerry as a monk and Logic as an undertaker. From Pierce Egan's ' Life in London, or the Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn Esq. and his Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis', originally issued as a monthly journal at a shilling a time, illustrated by George Cruikshank (1792-1878). The original Sadler's Wells Theatre in Islington, north London. It was built by Richard Sadler in 1683 as a music house close to a newly-discovered mineral spring with the intention of rivalling similar establishments at Epsom and Tunbridge Wells. The various entertainments in the theatre's early days included jugglers, dancing dogs, and even a singing duck!

A stage set, with the Olympian gods attending a banquet in a room with walls of smoke and decorated with dishes, served by satyrs. It was engraved by Balthasar Sigmund Setlezky (1695-1771) from one of the 25 stage sets designed by Lodovico Burnacini (1636-1707) for the opera 'Il Pomo d'Oro', by the Italian composer Antonio Cesti with a libretto by Francesco Sbarra, staged 1668.

Total Destruction of the Theatre Royal Covent Garden, by Fire. On Wednesday, March 5, 1856; discovered just at the conclusion of a Bal Masque, given by Professor Anderson, when the company, rushing to the doors, made their escape, and fled into the neighbouring streets for means of conveyance to their respective residence, the grotequeness of their dresses contrasting strangely with the scene which the neighbourhood presented from so fearful a calamity occurring at that hour (5 o'clock) of the morning. The loss of property by this sad event is estimated at upwards of £250,000.
