Rare lithograph. Printed area 140 x 140mm (5½ x 5½"). Foxing around edges.
The 13th century tower in the market place at Altdorf, Switzerland, where according to legend William Tell shot an apple from his son's head. In 1895 a memorial statue was erected in front of the tower. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

A collection of pencil sketches by Winifred Austen (1876– 1964) drawn to illustrate 'A Book of Dogs', including one not used. The signed letter, dated 23rd February 1904, was to accompany 28 cards sent by Austen to William H. Ward, who had engraved and printed the book six years earlier, with a typed list on the second page. Of the 28, one ('Tatters') is marked in pencil 'To Helen Hofer' and is not present here. Ward initialed the letter as confirmation of receipt two days later. Among the breeds illustrated are a bulldog, pug, Irish terrier, dingo, Schipperke and dingo. Winifred Austen (1876-1964) was a painter and engraver known for her pictures of animals and birds, publishing individual plates and illustrating several books.

Half-length portrait of Helena Beatson (1762-1839) wearing a turban and necklace, drawing a portrait of a woman and child with a pen.. The British Museum's example of the larger mezzotint identifies her as Catherine Read's niece. A gifted amateur artist, taught by her aunt, she exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1774 (aged twelve!) and accompanied Read to India, where she married Sir Charles Oakley, later governor of Madras.

Hugh Boyd (1746-1794) was educated at Trinity College Dublin and went on to become editor for the political paper, the Freeholder in Dublin, before moving to London where he joing the club attended by Johnson, Goldsmith and Burke. He accompanied Lord Macartney to India as his secretary and was captured and imprisoned by the French. He became Master-Attendant in Madras where he edited the Madras Courier and other Anglo-Indian journals. His miscellaneous works were published between 1798 and 1800, and there were many who believed him,(rather than Sir Philip Francis), to be the author of the 'Junius Letters', which had appeared in the Public Advertiser, London, from 1769 to 1772, attacking George III and his ministers.

A portrait taken from a bust of Joseph Chalier (1747-93) who was a French lawyer and revolutionary politician. This version has the title changed, Henriette-Félicité Tassaert as painter, and the revolutionary symbols in the borders removed.

Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Queen of Hanover from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821 as the estranged wife of King George IV. Princess Charlotte of Wales, was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (later George IV), and Caroline of Brunswick. She was expected to ascend the British throne after the deaths of her grandfather, George III, and her father, but died in childbirth at the age of 21, predeceasing them both.

A naked man and women stand together, their bodies partially covered with draped robes. Published in Cheron's, 'Recueil des pierres antiques gravées'. Élisabeth Sophie Chéron (1648-1711) was a French painter and engraver who received her training from her father, Henri Chéron, an enamel painter, miniaturist, and engraver. Coming from an artistic family, her brother, Louis Chéron (1655-1725), was also a painter, illustrator, and art teacher. At the age of 22, in 1670, she became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture as a portrait painter, supported by the renowned artist Charles Le Brun (1619-90). She was the fourth woman to be admitted to the academy.

Cocker Spaniels. Maud Alice Earl (1864 - 1943) was an eminent British-American canine painter. Her works are much enjoyed by dog enthusiasts and also accurately record many breeds. Earl was the born in London, the daughter of artist George Earl and his first wife Alice Beaumont Rawlins. Maud's profession was the continuation of a family tradition. George Earl, an avid sportsman and noted sporting painter, was his daughter's first teacher and had his daughter study the anatomy of her subjects, drawing dog, horse and human skeletons to improve her skill. She later said that her father's instruction had given her ability that set her apart from other dog painters. After her father's tutelage Maud went on to study at Royal Female School of Art (later incorporated into the Central School of Art). Earl became famous during the Victorian Era, a time when women were not expected to make their living at painting. Nevertheless, she developed a select clientele, including Royals amongst her patrons such as Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. Although evidently extremely successful in England, Earl felt that the world she knew had been destroyed by World War I and she emigrated to New York City in 1916. By this time her work had received wide international recognition and her popular images were published in a number of books and in print form. The Sportsman's Year featured twelve of Earl's works as engravings. Maud Earl died in New York in 1943 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York. For the 'Sportsman's Year'. His executors transferred to the BM his official papers (now in the British Library). Engraved by Caroline Watson (1760 - 1814).

Scene from Act 5, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's tragedy 'Coriolanus'. Stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after Angelica Kauffman. Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case, getting around the rules by electing Bartolozzi as a painter). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton enticed Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal.

Allegory with an angel creating rain, which three cherubs gratefully collect. Below a bull's head, fish and flowers. Engraving after history painter Maria Cosway (1760-1838). Cosway exhibited her paintings at the Royal Academy from 1781 to 1789, and occasionally thereafter, but her artistic ambitions were hampered by her husband, the artist Richard Cosway, who refused to allow her to sell her work. She was also a prolific printmaker.

Portrait of Abraham Cowley (1618 - 1667), poet; bust length in oval frame, long hair, wearing gown. Lettered to pedestal. By George Vertue (1683 - 1756), probably issued as a frontispiece to an edition of the sitter's 'Works'. A prolific poet, Cowley had a profound impact upon later seventeenth-century poetry. His reputation was short-lived however and had waned by the mid-eighteenth century. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, his first volume of verse, Poetical Blossoms, was published in 1633 when he was fifteen and included poems written from the age of ten. As a Royalist during the English civil wars he was deprived of his Cambridge fellowship in 1643. He joined King Charles I at Oxford before following Queen Henrietta Maria to France as her secretary. On the Restoration she granted him land. He studied medicine and became an MD in 1657, thereafter living in retirement, studying botany and writing essays. After the portrait by Sir Peter Lely (1618 - 1680).
