Agrippina, surrounded by her Children, weeping over the Ashes of Germannicus.
B. West R.A. pinxit, 1773, London. V. Green, Engraver in Mezzotinto to his Majesty Fecit. From the Original Picture in the Possession of A. Vesey.
Publish'd by J. Boydell, Cheapside July 23. 1774.
Mezzotint, very rare open letter title, 610 x 430mm. 24 x 17". Margin with tears, one just into plate at right.
The widow Agrippina, seated, mourns with her head resting against an urn inscribed with her husband Germanicus's name, comforted by one of her daughters, who touches her neck. A naked boy stands at her feet, leaning back with his hand on his brother's head; behind two young women stand, their arms around each other. A young man beside them buries his head in his hands, another son at the left bows his head; a crown, laurels and a statue of an eagle in the right foreground. In 5 AD Agrippina married Germanicus, her second cousin and step-grandson of the Emperor Augustus. Agrippina had nine children by Germanicus, including the future emperor Gaius (Caligula). Agrippina was very popular among the Roman people, not least because of her marriage to the much-loved Germanicus, whose ashes she brought back to Rome after his death in the east in AD 21. Her strength and popularity aroused the suspicions of the emperor Tiberius and his right-hand man Sejanus, head of the Praetorian guards and she and her eldest son were banished to the Pontian islands on the Bay of Naples in AD 29. Four years later, following a beating so severe that she was blinded in one eye, Agrippina starved herself to death. Her popularity, however, ensured a decent burial, and she was laid to rest at Rome in the Mausoleum of Augustus After Benjamin West (1738 - 1820). Whitman: 180, II of II. Chaloner Smith: undescribed. The Tower of William Tell at Altorf.
[Probably by Mary Anne Theresa Whitby, c.1828]
Rare lithograph. Printed area 140 x 140mm (5½ x 5½"). Foxing around edges.
The 13th century tower in the market place at Altdorf, Switzerland, where according to legend William Tell shot an apple from his son's head. In 1895 a memorial statue was erected in front of the tower. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868). The Death of Ananias [parallel text in Latin] Act. Chap. V.
Raphael Urbin Pinxit. E. Kirkall Fecit.
Mezzotint printed in blue, scarce; platemark 360 x 515mm (14¼ x 20¼"). Crease through centre; several tears; glued to backing sheet.
The death of Ananias, struck down in front of the Apostles gathered on a platform at centre. Ananias and his wife Sapphira were, according to the Acts of the Apostles, members of the Early Christian church in Jerusalem. Ananias dropped dead suddenly after attempting to deceive the Holy Spirit by withholding part of the profit from the sale of a piece of land. Engraved from one of the famous cartoons executed by Raphael (1483 - 1520) for a series of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel, which were bought by Charles I. The cartoons were placed in Hampton Court Palace in 1699 and are now on permanent display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The first set of engravings of the cartoons were produced by Nicolas Dorigny between 1711-1719, after which several other sets were made. This mezzotint is by Elisha Kirkall (1681/2-1742), one of the most distinctive of British engravers. Often printed in a blue-green ink which itself was innovative at a time when almost all British prints were still printed in black, Kirkall used the mezzotint technique which in the 17th and 18th century was used predominantly for portraits and domestic subjects, and used it to render a much wider range of subjects. Ex: Collection of the Late Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd; for Dorigny's engraving of the same Raphael cartoon, see. ref. 14717.
