On December 1, 1793, the British packet ship Antelope was passing by Cuba on her way home to England from Jamaica, when she was engaged by two French schooners, one of which was L'Atalante (probably an old American privateer which passed into French hands at the end of the war for American independence). L'Atalante gave chase alone after the Antelope bore up for Jamaica, and caught up the following day. The Atalante grappled the Antelope and its crew tried to board the British ship, but was repulsed and, in the ensuing battle, the Antelope took possession of its opponent.
