G. Faithorne fec. [1656]
Two rare engravings, combined area 380 x 155mm (15 x 6"). Both trimmed and pasted to album sheet; glue stains to edges.
Portrait of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), lord protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland, with a battle taking place behind him, after a painting by Robert Walker. With allegorical tree glorifying Cromwell below. Both were published as illustrations to Louis de Gand's 'Parallelum Olivae' (1656). Two engravings by William Faithorne (c.1620-91), printmaker who was apprenticed to the printseller William Peake, with whom he served in the royalist army during the civil war. At the Restoration Faithorne was appointed engraver in copper to the king, doubtless as reward for his devotion to the Stuart cause. The finest native British engraver born before the eighteenth century, Faithorne was highly esteemed by Pepys (who recorded many visits to his shop) while enthusiasts such as Horace Walpole ensured his posthumous reputation, which led to fine proofs of his work fetching extraordinary prices in the late Georgian period.

His life supposedly spanned the reigns of monarchs from Henry VII to Charles II. In 1667 Jenkins stated on oath that he carried arrows to the English archers at the Battle of Flodden Field (1513). First published in 1752, this plate originally had the title outside the printed border, but the plate has been cut down and title lowered.

Henry Jenkins of Ellerton in Yorkshire, Who Lived to the surprizing Age of 169. Which is 16 Years longer than Old Parr. Taken from an original Painting done by Walker. The great Age of Henry Jenkins, by Mrs. Anne Saville. When I cam first to live at Bolton, I was told several particulars of the great age of Henry jenkins; but I believe little of the story for many years...where Henry jenkins, of Ellerton upon Swale, labourer, aged 157 years, was produced, and deposed as a witness. Epitaph, on a Monument erected at Bolton in Yorkshire, by the Subscription of several to the Memory of Heny Jenkins...A life of labour, and a mind at ease, He lived to the amazing age of 169. Was interr'd here December 6, 1670, And has this justice done to his memory, 1743.
