Engraving. 160 x 115mm (6¼ x 4½").
Antoine de Bourbon-Bueil (1607-1632), Count of Moret, was the legitimised son of the French King Henry IV (1553-1610) and his mistress Jacqueline de Bueil (1558-1651). He conspired with Gaston d'Orleans against the policy for the establishment of a strong Royal Government, and took part in the rebellion led by himself and the Duke of Montmorency against King Louis XIII, which led to the Battle of Castelnaudary. He was wounded during the battle, but his body was never found, and legend had it that he survived and carried on the life of a hermit in Anjou.

Anna. Comtissa de Bedford.
Antonius, Van Dyck Eques pinxit. P. Lombart Sculpsit.
Londini, avec Priv. du Roy et ex. parisis. [n.d. c.1660.]
Copper engraving. Plate 350 x 247mm. 13¾ x 9¾".
Anne Carr, Countess of Bedford (1620-1684) was wife to William, Duke of Bedford and daughter or Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset and Frances Howard. According to Burke's Peerage, she was born in 1615 in the Tower of London, but other sources give 1620. Lombart's most famous work was the series of twelve portraits after van Dyck that he engraved around 1660, often known as the 'Countesses' from the Latin of their titles. Mariette in his entry on Lombart in his Abecedario stated that this set alone would suffice to place him 'au rang des premiers graveurs'. All twelve plates are the same size, and show three-quarter-length figures, ten women and two men, in 15mm wide borders that imitate frames of the period.

Mezzotint, fine impression. 340 x 250mm (13½ x 9¾"). Trimmed to plate and each edge lined with paper mount. Some markings along the top edge.
A scene depicting Time, an old winged man, taking clippers to the young Cupid's wings, who tries to struggle out of his grasp. The personified image of Time has its roots in the Greek association of time ('chronos') with Cronos, their god of agriculture, which is why he is often depicted with a scythe, as here. It is possible that Van Dyck's arresting characterisation of Time derives from Brozino's depiction of Time in 'Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time', who somewhat sinisterly gazes upon the ambiguous scene of Cupid and Venus. Possibly Van Dyck's scene asserts with more force that time is fleeting to the detriment of love. In a mezzotint portrait of James McAdell by Richard Earlom (after a drawing by McArdell), McArdell holds a scraper in his hand over a copper plate before him of 'Time clipping Cupid's Wings' (1771).

Anna de Morton Comitissa.
Antonius Van Dyck Eques pinxit. P. Lombart Sculpsit.
Londini, avec Privileige du Roy et ex. parisis. [n.d. c.1660.]
Copper engraving with large margins. Collector's mark on verso. Plate 355 x 260mm. 14 x 10¼". Tears into plate lower left.
Anna Dalkeith, Countess of Morton (d.1654), was daughter or Sir Edward Villiers and wife to Robert Douglas, Earl of Morton. Ex Collection: Cabinet Brentano, Johann Melchior von Birckenstock (1738-1809), Vienna and Frankfurt. Lugt: 345.
