An American Indian leaning against a large rock is looking down into a brook which gushes from its base. His birch bark canoe is drawn up beside him in the long grass and ferns. Behind the rock grows a pine tree, the lower branch of which frames the top of the picture. The background is a lake fringed with trees and mountains.
