Portrait of Simon-Nicholas Henri Linguet (1736-1794) a French journalist and advocate who was imprisoned in the Bastille following a caustic attack on the duc de Duras in 1780. Beneath the portrait are stacked books labelled with the names of philosophers and lawyers whilst another book is resting open at a page titled 'Plaidoyers et Mémoires pour le Comte de Morangiés 1772-1773' which was the title of Linguet's legal treatise published in 1773.
