Frances Abington (1737-1815), actress. Born in lowly circumstances, Abington grew up in the slums around Drury Lane, and sold flowers and sang in Covent Garden as a girl. Along with other jobs she did when young (kitchenmaid, milliner's assistant), various accounts of her life hint at prostitution during her early years. After making a start as an actress in London her first professional success came while working in Dublin, rejoining Garrick's Drury Lane company where she established herself as one of the leading comedy actresses of her generation. She was also the mistress of at least two prominent figures. Engraving after the several portrait 'Mrs Abington as the Comic Muse' by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1764-8, hair and dress repainted 1772-3) now in Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. This was one of several portraits that Reynolds painted of Abington- he was an admirer and purchased twelve tickets for her benefit performance in 1772. Reynolds' portrait was a companion to his portrait of Sarah Siddons as 'the Tragic Muse'.

He then undertook a circumnavigation of the globe during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Anson commanded the fleet that defeated the French Admiral de la Jonquière at the First Battle of Cape Finisterre during the War of the Austrian Succession. Anson went on to be First Lord of the Admiralty during the Seven Years' War.

He served as a Captain in the Channel for many years when in 1778 was advanced to Rear Admiral of the White and sent as Commander in Chief in the West Indies. Having been succesful in taking St. Lucia from the French he served in the West Indies for another couple of years after which in 1782 he returned to the Channel Fleet and served under Howe at the relief of Gibraltar.

A large urn can be seen behind to the right, and landscape in the distance and Capel-Coningsby succeeded his father as 5th Earl of Essex, and served as Recorder and High Steward of Leominster in 1802, and as Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire from 1802 to 1817. He became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1801, and received an honorary D.C.L. from Oxford University in 1810.

A three-quarter portrait of Jane (or Jean) Cathcart (née Hamilton, 1726-71), sister of Sir William Hamilton and wife of Charles Schaw Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart, ambassador at St Petersburg 1768-72. While in Russia Jane became a friend of Catherine the Great: she influenced the empress in her decision to commission the 944-piece Green Frog Service from Wedgwood, a coup for the pottery. A three-quarter portrait of Jane (or Jean) Cathcart (née Hamilton, 1726-71), sister of Sir William Hamilton and wife of Charles Schaw Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart, ambassador at St Petersburg 1768-72. While in Russia Jane became a friend of Catherine the Great: she influenced the empress in her decision to commission the 944-piece Green Frog Service from Wedgwood, a coup for the pottery. Her son Charles Allan Cathcart (1759-88) is famed for his expedition to open up China, although he died en route.
