A half-length portrait in oval of George Pigot (1719-77), twice President of the East India Company. Having entered the EIC service at 17, he became governor and commander-in-chief of Madras in 1755, defending the city against the French in 1758-9. He resigned in 1763, but took the office again in 1775. After a power struggle he died while under arrest.
