After the Nine Years' War he became the Austrian viceroy in Catalonia, being replaced when Philip V became king of Spain, the spark that started the War of the Spanish Succession. Mezzotint with very large margins. 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾").
Edmond Halley (1656-1742), astronomer, the first to calculate a comet's orbit. At the University of Oxford his studies of the theories of Sir Isaac Newton inspired him to write his own 'Principles', which he published with his own money in 1687. In 1721 he was made Astronomer Royal and began an 18 year study of the moon's complete revolution through its ascending and descending nodes. He also wrote another important treatise called Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis (Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy), which he started in 1682 and published in 1705. In this he mathematically demonstrated that comets move in a elliptic orbits around the sun and how over time they would pass the same point. His accurate prediction of the return of what is now Halley's Comet in 1758 validated his theory.

[n.d., c.1751.]
Mezzotint. 350 x 245mm (13¾ x 9¾"), 18th century watermark. Trimmed to image on right.
A half-length portrait in oval of Henry St John, styled first Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1851), politician, diplomatist and author. St John first entered parliament in 1701 and was appointed secretary at war in 1704 before resigning in 1708. He was subsequently secretary of state (1710-14) and aligned himself with the Jacobite cause to secure power for himself and the Tories (spending several years in exile in France from 1716-23 as a result). Pardoned in 1723, Bolingbroke returned to England and tried to rally tory opposition in parliament, but was mostly active as a writer in later years.

Mezzotint, platemark 325 x 235mm (12¾ x 8¾") small margins.
Portrait after Thomas Murray (1663-1735), a popular portrait painter whose sitters included Queen Ann. Engraved by John Smith (1652-1743), a first-class mezzotint engraver who made the mezzotint portrait a serious rival to the traditional engraved portrait (in which the French specialised). In the first half of the 18th century no serious print collection, whether in Britain or abroad, was without examples of Smith's work.
