A portrait of Walter Scott early in his career, sitting on a stone wall, pencil and notebook in his hands, with Scottish Borders scenery behind him and a dog at his feet. 1810 was the year his poem 'The Lady of the Lake' was published; his first novel, 'Waverley', did not appear until 1814.
