Hugh Stowell Brown (1823-86), Baptist minister. Born in Douglas, on the Isle of Man, Brown was apprenticed to a land surveyor before becoming a preacher first in Castletown and, for much of his career, in Liverpool. Etched from the portrait by Edwin Long (Manx Museum, Isle of Man). Edwin Long (1829-1891) was born in Bath, had an early and precocious talent for drawing, studied at the RA Schools from 1849, and also was a student under John Phillip, who encouraged him to travel. in 1874 he visited Egypt and Syria, beginning his career as an Orientalist painter. He developed a rich, exotic style, strong in detail and often on canvases of large size, allowing him to show long processions, enormous palaces or sweeps of mountains on an epic scale. His best years were in the 1870s-80s, when he was a popular, successful artist specialising in biblical stories and life in ancient Egypt. He became ARA in 1876 and RA in 1881.

Portrait of the mezzotint engraver Samuel Cousins (1801-87), engraved by Cousins himself. He sits at his etching table, in profile to right, head turned to look towards the viewer, with engraving tools in his hands. The portrait demonstrates, with unusual clarity, the tools and working process of a printmaker like Cousins. After the painting in the collection of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Exeter. Cousins (1801-1887) one of the leading engravers of the nineteenth century, was elected as a full member of the Royal Academy in 1885.

He devastated twenty towns … When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, ‘Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to the LORD that I cannot break.’ ‘My father,’ she replied, ‘you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me just as you promised, now that the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites” (Judges 11:30-36, NIV).
