He was part of the original group of Oxford experimentalists attached to the Royal Society of London, and later crossed circles with physicians and was involved in the dissection of Ann Green. During the First Anglo-Dutch War of 1652, he worked in practical medicine alongside Daniel Whistle, who was in charge of wounded naval personnel. In 1660, with the English Restoration, he turned back to the Church, and in 1663 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society, and a year later was made President of Trinity College. In 1670 he was Dean of Wells Cathedral and for three years, from 1673, he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

As colonel of the Foot Guards he fought in the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 and the Battle of Worcester in 1651 for Charles II. In 1663 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was a confederate of Monmouth and 1681 he was found guilty of High Treason and sentenced to death for refusing to subscribe to the Test Act. He escaped from Edinburgh Castle under the disguise of a page. He then left the country but four years later was taken in an abortive attempt to invade Scotland and was beheaded.

A rare illustration of one of the arches erected for the coronation procession of Charles II from The Tower of London to Whitehall, on St George's Day, April 23rd, 1661. At each arch the procession would pause to listen to speeches and song composed by John Ogilby (1600-72), 'Master of the Royal Imprimerie'. Ogilby is best known for his 1675 'Britannia', Europe's first road atlas, and the large-scale map of London, completed after his death by his wife's grandson William Morgan, publisher of this plate. This is an early English work by David Loggan, who came to England in the late 1650s, having been born in Danzig of English and Scottish parents.

A rare illustration of one of the arches erected for the coronation procession of Charles II from The Tower of London to Whitehall, on St George's Day, April 23rd, 1661. At each arch the procession would pause to listen to speeches and song composed by John Ogilby (1600-72), 'Master of the Royal Imprimerie'. Ogilby is best known for his 1675 'Britannia', Europe's first road atlas, and the large-scale map of London, completed after his death by his wife's grandson William Morgan, publisher of this plate. This is an early English work by David Loggan, who came to England in the late 1650s, having been born in Danzig of English and Scottish parents.
