John Frederick Lewis (1804-76) RA, became known as 'Spanish Lewis' to differentiate him from his artist brother, Frederick Christian Lewis ('Indian Lewis'), who travelled to Asia.

A young woman seated cross-legged on a carpet, wearing a mantilla over her head, jewellery, and ornately decorated bodice with broad sleeves; two ballustraded windows of a house seen in background. According to the ink mss on the back this is 'From Lewis' sketches of Spain , Spanish Characters made 1833-4 the sketch in the posession og G. Woodzoffe Esq.'

From "Sketches of Spain"; the interior of the friar's office in a Spanish monastery. John Frederick Lewis (1804-1876) was an Orientalist English painter. He lived in Spain between 1832 and 1834. In 1859 he became an Associate of the Royal Academy and in 1865 a member.
