Plate from Abraham Rees' 'The Cyclopaedia; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature', engraved by the visionary artist and poet William Blake (1757-1827) to illustrate a text by sculptor John Flaxman. After a period of coolness, Blake and Flaxman were on good terms again at this time, and the sculptor intervened to secure Blake several engraving commissions (including this one) in the 1810s. Without these commissions, Blake might well have fallen into dire poverty at this time.

An impressive scene showing a pastoral Greek landscape in which Lord Byron lies asleep, his companions sleep nearby. The scene illustrates a section from Byron's 1816 poem 'The Dream'. Byron died not long after this print was published and is the last portrait of him while in Greece fighting the War of Greek Independence.

Detail of Charles Eastlake's full-length portrait of Napoleon in the uniform of the Chasseurs, on board the Bellerophon with soldiers around him. Eastlake's painting was enormously popular when first exhibited in 1815 and established the painter's reputation. The painting is now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

Schouten Island in eastern Tasmania, Australia. The island lay within the territory of the Oyster Bay tribe of Tasmanian Aborigines. In 1642, while surveying the south-west coast of Tasmania, Abel Tasman named the island after a member of the Council of the Dutch East India Company. Plate to 'A residence in Tasmania: with a descriptive tour through the island from Macquarie Harbour to Circular Head by H. Butler Stoney'.
