J.C. Stadler Sculp.t.
London. Published April 1st 1817 at R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 101 Strand.
Aquatint, printed in colours and hand finished. Sheet 420 x 530mm (16½ x 21"). Trimmed within plate, close to publisher's inscription. Slight repaired small hole near front boat.
David Laing (1774-1856) built the New Custom House in 1817 publishing a book chronicling his problems with the foundations the next year. Subsidence caused the building to collapse in 1825, causing the ruin of Laing's business. The view is from a series of eighteen 'Views of London' published by Ackermann between 1811 and 1822, engraved mostly from paintings by John Gendall and Thomas Shepherd; it is likely that one of these artists sketched Laing's drawing for engraving.
Adams; 221 no 6.
