Etching, sheet 260 x 185mm (10¼ x 7¼"). Trimmed and glued to backing sheet with decorative border. Fine impression.
Anne of Cleves (1515-1557), fourth wife of Henry VIII of England and Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. The marriage was never consummated, and she was not crowned queen consort. When her health began to fail, Anne was allowed by Mary I to live at Chelsea Old Manor, and later died on 16 July 1557 (making her the last of Henry VIII's wives to die). Etched by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77) after the portrait by Holbein, now in the Louvre but at the time (1648) in the collection of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, who Hollar had known since 1636. In 1644 Hollar had moved to Antwerp due to the political climate in England. Lord Arundel was also in Antwerp at this time with much of his collection, and during his eight year stay in the city Hollar made numerous prints from works in the Arundel collection such as this. According the British Museum, this item is not listed by Ganz or Rowlands among the paintings or drawings by Holbein. The identification as Anne Boleyn may also be incorrect, although the sitter bears some resemblance to the woman depicted in a drawing attributed to Holbein and thought to be of Anne in the Royal Collection. Anne Boleyn (c.1500-1536) was second wife to Henry VIII, and mother to Elizabeth I.

Desiderius Erasmus Rotterodamus. Qui Patriae lumen qui nostri gloria fech [...]
Vorsterman sculptor D.D.: Hansus Holbenius pinxit. Cum Privilegio Reg: [c.1625]
Engraving, sheet 215 x 145mm (8½ x 5¾"). Trimmed to plate.
Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536), Dutch Renaissance humanist and a Catholic theologian. Erasmus prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament, and also wrote The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, Copia: Foundations of the Abundant Style, Julius Exclusus, and many other works. Erasmus lived through the Reformation period and he consistently criticized some contemporary popular Christian beliefs. In relation to clerical abuses in the Church, Erasmus remained committed to reforming the Church from within. He also held to Catholic doctrines such as that of free will, which some Protestant Reformers rejected in favour of the doctrine of predestination. His middle road disappointed and even angered many Protestants, such as Martin Luther, as well as conservative Catholics. One of the earliest of many prints reproducing the famous 1532 portrait of Erasmus by Hans Holbein the younger. Engraved by Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675), a favoured engraver of his contemporaries Rubens and Van Dyck. Despite his close relationship with Rubens (who was godfather to Vorsterman's eldest son), the engraver felt exploited by the famous painter. At one point Vorsterman made an attempt on Rubens' life, and subsequently moved to England, where he was employed by Charles I, Thomas Howard and the Earl of Pembroke to reproduce paintings from their collections. Howard was then the owner of this picture (one of many versions of the portrait that exist but one of the only ones believed to be painted by Holbein himself). The painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Published in the 'Iconographia' series of etchings after portraits by van Dyck, some of which van Dyck etched himself.
