Burbage [in pencil]. [Richard Burbage. The First Performer of King Richard III. From the Original Picture in Dulwich College…]
[S. Harding del et sculp.]
[n.d. c.1790.]
Stipple. Proof before letters. Image 157 x 126mm. Image stuck onto separate sheet.
Richard Burbage (1568-1619) was an actor and theatre owner. Burbage was a popular actor by his early 20s. His early acting career is poorly documented. It has been suggested that it included a stint in the Earl of Leicester's company, but there is no good evidence for this. He probably was acting with the Admiral's Men in 1590, with Lord Strange's Men in 1592, and with the Earl of Pembroke's Men in 1593; but most famously he was the star of William Shakespeare's theatre company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men which mutated into the King's Men on the ascension of James I in 1603. He played the title role in the first performances of many of Shakespeare's plays, including Hamlet, Othello, Richard III and King Lear. But he was in great demand and also appeared in the plays of many of the great contemporary writers, such as Ben Jonson (the title role in Volpone, and Subtle in The Alchemist), John Marston (The Malcontent), John Webster (The Duchess of Malfi) and Beaumont & Fletcher (The Maid's Tragedy).

Watercolour and wash oval, verso in ink 'From a Portrait in the possession of Ld Carteret'; 165 x 140mm (6½ x 5½"). Tipped into album sheet with hand-drawn border.
John Carteret, second Earl Granville (1690-1763), politician. Carteret was appointed ambassador-extraordinary to Sweden in 1719, a position in which he triumphed by rescuing the Swedes (facing disaster following the death of Charles XII) from domination by Russia. During his absence, however, the rise of Robert Walpole resulted in Carteret's being sidelined through a transfer to the lord lieutenancy of Ireland. Carteret's opposition to Walpole was a leitmotif of his career. Watercolour by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.

Drawn by J.D. Harding, from a sketch by S. Jackson
& Published by J. Rees, Book and Print Seller, 53 Wine Street, 1831.
Lithograph. 285 x 330mm (11¼ x 13"). Repaired tear entering image, creasing. Damaged.
A view using Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original design, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. After an 1829 competition to design the bridge was annulled when Thomas Telford tried to declare himself the winner, the second competition (1830) was won by the 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The foundation stone was laid in 1831, but work was stopped almost immediately by the Bristol Riots. Restarted in 1836 the project continued to be dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died prematurely aged 53 years in 1859 but the Bridge was completed as his memorial and finally opened in 1864.

Silvester Harding 1801
Watercolour and wash, sheet 180 x 160mm (7 x 6¼").
Spencer Compton, second earl of Northampton (1601-43), army officer. A courtier loyal to the crown, Compton was appointed master of the robes to Prince Charles in 1622 and became a close friend of the future king. He raised troops for the bishops' wars of 1639 and 1640 and was quick to side with the king after the outbreak of civil war in 1642. During the Battle of Hopton Heath in Staffordshire the following year he was killed by a blow to the head from a halberd. Watercolour by Silvester Harding (1745/51-1809), artist and publisher. After setting up a shop in Fleet Street with his brother Edward in 1786, Harding was chiefly employed in drawing portraits of theatrical celebrities, and in copying ancient portraits in watercolours, as here. The partnership was dissolved by 1798 (before this watercolour was made). Harding was known to, and esteemed by the collectors of his day, and many examples of his work are in the British Museum. His son George Perfect Harding also specialised in watercolour copies of early portraits.

[George Perfect Harding after Godfrey Kneller, c.1802]
Watercolour and wash, 135 x 115mm (5¼ x 4½"). Tipped into album sheet with hand-drawn border.
John Drummond, styled first earl of Melfort and Jacobite first duke of Melfort (1649-1714), politician. Appointed a secretary for Scotland (where he was given estates) in 1684, Melfort's close association with James II led to him becoming the king's principal secretary of state and accompanying him to Ireland following the invasion of William of Orange in 1688. He was then sent to Rome as an ambassador to try and secure the support of the papacy for a Jacobite invasion, although his position was undermined by the Abbé Renaudot, an agent used by the French, whose intrigues led to Louis XIV asking James II to dismiss Melfort. Eyre served as Solicitor-General from 1708 to 1710. In 1710, he was appointed a puisne judge of the Court of Queen's Bench. In 1718, he gave an opinion favouring the view of the prince of Wales rather than that of the king over the education of the prince's children, and was therefore passed over for promotion to be Lord Chief Justice of King's Bench. However, he was appointed Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1723 and then appointed as Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in 1725, a post in which he served until his death. He also served as Member of Parliament for Southampton from 1727 until 1729. [Philip Herbert, first earl of Montgomery and fourth earl of Pembroke]
[Philip Herbert, first earl of Montgomery and fourth earl of Pembroke]
[George Perfect Harding, c.1801]
Watercolour and wash, oval, 205 x 165mm (8 x 6½"). Tipped into album sheet with hand-drawn border.
Philip Herbert, first earl of Montgomery and fourth earl of Pembroke (1584-1650), courtier and politician. As a young man Pembroke was a favourite of James I. He fared less well under Charles I (whose queen Henrietta Maria disliked him), and this was no doubt a factor (along with his attachment to protestantism) in Pembroke's allegiance to parliament during the civil war. Pembroke was a great patron of the arts, who first commissioned the De Caus brothers to design a new palace for him at Wilton, and then (after that burnt down in 1647) enlisted Inigo Jones and John Webb to design a new house in the Palladian style. He was also a great patron of Van Dyck, whose portrait this watercolour is derived from, via Wenceslaus Hollar's etching. Watercolour by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.

[Thomas Hobbes]
[Thomas Hobbes]
[George Perfect Harding, c.1802]
Watercolour and wash, 210 x 160mm (8¼ x 6¼"). Tipped into album sheet with hand-drawn border.
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), philosopher. Hobbes wrote extensively on history, geometry and politics. His major work, 'Leviathan' (1651), was an important influence on the tradition of utilitarian political thinking. He was the friend of Francis Bacon, Ben Jonson and William Harvey, and tutor of Charles II, who later granted him a pension, but his reputation as an atheist gained him many opponents within the church and government. Watercolour probably based on the portrait by Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre, by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.
For Pierre's portrait of Hobbes see ref. 22212.
