[Bunney & Gold, 1804.]
Aquatint. 140 x 229mm. 5½ x 9". Slightly cut.
The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American War of Independence. It was the longest siege endured by the British Armed Forces. In November 1781 the British garrison filed silently out of the defence works and made a surprise sortie. They routed the whole body of the besieging infantry in the trenches, set their batteries on fire, blew up and spiked their cannon, destroyed their entrenchments, and killed or took prisoner a large number of the Spaniards. Mortimer Pinxit. J.R. Smith Sculpsit.
Published Feb.14th 1780 by J. Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London.
Mezzotint. 255 x 305mm (10 x 12"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet at corners. Good impression of a rare print.
Banditti scene after John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-79), published soon after the artist's death. Influenced by the works of Salvator Rosa (immensely popular during the period), Mortimer incorporated Rosa's disturbing banditti and occult subject matter in the 1770s. This print is usually regarded as a generic banditti scene: a preparatory drawing in the collection of Richard Payne Knight (now in the British Museum) was etched by Robert Blyth and published in November 1780 with the title 'Banditti Returning'. However, a related painting by Mortimer (Newcastle, Hatton Gallery) is titled 'The Sacrifice of Polyxena'. In Euripides' plays, Polyxena was sacrificed at the end of the Trojan War to appease the gods. Ex: collection of the Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd; Ex: Collection Christopher Mendez; D'Oench 145. Early and scarce sepia-tinted lithograph, heightened in white. Image 455 x 335mm, 18 x 13¼". Outline border. One repair and minor creasing in margins.
A large dead hare strung up by its legs dominates the centre of the composition; dead birds including tits, finches, thrush and partridge. After Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton (Flemish, c.1664 - 1750). The engraver is Kaspar Auer (German, 1795 - 1821). This plate formed part of a series of lithographed reproductions after paintings in the royal collection in Munich. "At this early stage lithography had not been developed far enough to reproduce colours, so the artists contented themselves with the addition of one or two tint-stones, from which highlights were scraped out to reveal the white of the paper. But to a public educated on the traditional type of 'gallery' publication, where all the paintings were reproduced in engraving, even this touch of colour would have been a surprise, and would have associated these prints rather with the traditional chiaroscuro woodcut." London. Publish'd March 15th. 1781, for Watson & Dickinson No. 158, New Bond Street.
Etching with stipple in red ink, fine proof before title, sheet 170 x 175mm. 6¾ x 7". Trimmed to plate at top and bottom.
Portrait in an oval of Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, KG (1738- 1805), British Army officer and colonial administrator. In the United States and Britain, he is best remembered as one of the leading generals in the American War of Independence. His 1781 surrender to a combined American-French force at the Siege of Yorktown is often incorrectly considered the end of the war; in fact, it continued for a further two years. Despite this defeat, he retained the confidence of successive British governments and continued to enjoy an active career. In India, where he served two terms as governor general, he is remembered for promulgating the Permanent Settlement. As Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, he argued for Catholic emancipation and oversaw the response to the 1798 Irish Rebellion and a French invasion of Ireland. After Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1736 - 1808). From the Norman Blackburn Collection. De Vesme: 793, iii/iv.
