Two merchants conclude a trade agreement on a quay, shaking hands as one one swears an oath. The personifications of Fraus (Fraud) and Falsehood (Fallacia) accompany them. A blindfolded (and therefore unknowing) notary records the (false) agreement. The second in a series of eight plates critiquing the greed and deceit of litigation, with text in Latin, Dutch & French.

Plantin, a French publisher based in Antwerp, is best known today as the publisher of Ortelius's landmark atlas, the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. The building that housed his business still exists, with the records of the firm intact, now the Plantin-Moretus Museum.

Set of four engravings, each sheet approx 230 x 185mm (9 x 7¼"). Trimmed; some staining; tear to 'Aurora'.
The four times of day: morning, midday, evening and night. Set of engravings copied in reverse after the 1595 set by Jan Saenredam, who himself was engraving designs by Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617). In the 1580s Goltzius was in Italy but by 1591 he was back in his native Netherlands, where Saenredam was amongst the engravers working in his studio to disseminate his designs. These copies were published in Rome by Rossi.
