Half-length portrait of John Smith, a.k.a. Buckhorse (boxer, fl.1720-50), adapted from the portrait by Daniel Dodd. He earned his nickname riding for the Duke of Queensberry, the inveterate gambler. This point of Time represents the Queen after having led the Van along the whole of the Enemy's Line to leeward being so much disabled in her Sails & Rigging, and at some distance from the body of the British Fleet, that the French Van bore up in a Formed Line with the intent to cut her off; which was prevented by the Royal Sovereign leading the Van of the British down to her Assistance which caused to French to ware and bear away to leeward.

John Dawes had bought the land and he began the residential development of Highbury by leasing out the land for 39 houses on Highbury Place between 1774-9. Designed and built by John Spiller, a speculative builder of Southwark, Highbury Place was completed in 1777. The North View of Highbury has a row of town houses centre right and distant left is a panoramic view of Islington, St. Pauls and the City of London although it is enlivened by a group of haymakers. The foreground of the West View includes a small herd of cattle with Highbury Fields and the terrace of houses making up Highbury Place.

When the gaoler Spurling told him he would have to wait until the trial was over Johnson pulled a pistol and shot him dead. Housden's trial was halted and both tried for murder and convicted. Despite having the entire court as witnesses for the prosecution, both continued to deny the offence until their executions on the 14th September. Johnson was then hanged in chains near Holloway, between Islington and Highgate. Engraving published in the 'The Tyburn chronicle: or, Villainy display'd in all its branches'.

A unique copy of an aquatint by John Harris after Robert Dodd, one of four plates illustrating the events of 8th September 1782, when a storm struck a British fleet in the Gulf of Florida. The fleet, containing merchants and French ships captured in the Battle of All Saints (April 12th 1782), was scattered, some damaged but HMS Ramillies & HMS Centaur were lost. 'Pallas' towed the damaged merchantman 'Lady Juliana' all the way back to England.

On 16 March 1782 Captain James Luttrell was appointed to the Mediator of 44 guns. In December, he sailed from El Ferrol to intercept an American frigate L’Alexandre who sailed from the mouth of the Gironde with other vessels in an “armed convoy” on 9 December 1782. The cargo of arms for the American War was stopped as the Mediator presented a formidable appearance; Luttrell bore down on them, and after a few broadsides cut off one of the largest ship, the Alexandre, and compelled her to strike. Mediator fought her way through the Franco-American line and isolated the Alexandre. As the Alexandre was taken the rest of the Franco-American fleet scattered and fled. It was not till five hours later that the Mediator came up with another of the vessels, the Ménagère, which she captured also. A desperate but unsuccessful attempt was made by the prisoners to set fire to the Mediator. The prizes were brought safely to England.

This led to the event lampooned here, in which Dumouriez arrested the four deputy-commissioners of the National Convention who had been sent to inquire into his conduct, handed them over to the enemy, and attempted to persuade his troops to march on Paris and overthrow the revolutionary government. The attempt failed, Dumouriez fled to the Austrian camp, and spent his later life travelling from country to country, involved in various intrigues. He settled in England after the government granted him a pension in 1804. From the 'Wonderful Magazine', an entertaining but short-lived periodical founded in 1793 by the hack writer and bookseller Henry Lemoine (1756-1812). The Pearl, Captain Montague, taking L'Esperance. This Action was fought in the Latitude of Burmudas Oct.r 1st 1780. The Enemy after being chased several hours was brought to close fight, which they maintained upwards of four hours, but being disabled with six foot water in the Hold, she struck and proved to be a valuable prize, being laden with Sugar, Coffee, Indigo & Ingots of Gold, mounted 38 Guns & had 200 Men.

Admiral Sir George Montagu (1750–1829) was appointed to the 32-gun frigate HMS Pearl, which when cruising near the Azores on 14 September 1779, captured the Spanish frigate Santa Monica of equal force. In December Pearl sailed with the fleet under Sir George Rodney, and assisted in the capture of the Caracas convoy; but having sprung her foremast, was ordered home with the prizes. She was afterwards sent out to North America, and on 30 September 1780, while on a cruise off the Bermudas, captured the Espérance, a frigate-built privateer of 32 guns. In the battle of Cape Henry, on 16 March 1781, she acted as repeating frigate. She was not with the fleet during the battle of the Chesapeake on 5 September, but joined it, still off Cape Henry, on the 14th, and was left to keep watch on the movements of the French till the 25th, when she sailed for New York. On 19 October she sailed again with the fleet, and on the 23rd was stationed ahead as a look-out (Pearl's Log). She returned to England in 1782.

Arthur Lionel Smith (1850 - 1924), historian; Master of Balliol College, Oxford. He studied at Balliol College, was a fellow of Trinity College, and returned to Balliol as a fellow in 1882. He remained at the college where he taught history for the rest of his life. 'A.L.S.' scratched in plate upper left. Francis Dodd (1874 - 1935) made two plates portraying Arthur Lionel Smith in 1915, this being the second. This is a reversed design either after the oil painting of Arthur Smith which Dodd completed in 1913, or a study for the painting. The painting was presented by subscribers to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1914; Balliol also holds a probable study for the head in coloured chalks (see John Jones, 'The Portraits of Balliol College. A Catalogue' (1990) cat. nos. 126, 127). Dodd was born in Glasgow and received his training at the Glasgow School of Art. After moving to London he became one of the leading portrait artists of his time. He was an official war artist in the 1914-1918 war, and made many fine etchings.

A scene depicting a robbery in Chelsea Fields, perpetrated by a Jewish gang led by Doctor Levi Weil on 11th June 1771. Weil, who had a doctorate from the University of Leyden, had been practicing unsuccesfully in London, causing him to turn to crime. They attacked the farm of Mrs Hutchings, a widow, shooting one of her labourers, who died the following day. A reward was offered and one of the gang's accomplices turned them in. Of the six defendants at the Old Bailey trial (Levi Weil, Asher Weil, Marcus Hartagh, Jacob Lazarus, Solomon Porter and Lazarus Harry), four were convicted of murder and robbery, Marcus Hartagh and Lazarus Harry acquitted for lack of evidence. While the four awaited execution they were attended by a rabbi, who did not pray with them; on the scaffold they sang a Hebrew hymn before they were dropped, on the 9th December 1771.

A scene depicting a robbery in Chelsea Fields, perpetrated by a Jewish gang led by Doctor Levi Weil on 11th June 1771. Weil, who had a doctorate from the University of Leyden, had been practicing unsuccesfully in London, causing him to turn to crime. “Greenland whale fishery” came to refer to whaling in the waters between Spitsbergen and Greenland. Whaleships followed the northward summer migration of the bowhead, sailing first to Spitsbergen, then drifting west to the edge of the East Greenland ice pack. The season generally laster four to five months. The identity of the two British whaleships in Robert Dodd's portrayal is unknown, but it is almost certain they were London-based vessels operating out of the Thames from where the largest British whaling fleet was based until well into the nineteenth century. By the mid-eighteenth century, the shortage of Arctic whales was already sending the whaling fleets as far away as Greenland. The Howland Great Wet Dock at Rotherhithe - built at the end of the seventeenth century - was, in 1763, renamed the Greenland Dock. In 1783, the year in which Dodd completed the painting from which this engraving is done the British whaling industry saw a marked revival after a wartime depression. The trade soon began to revive after the peace settlement with both France and the United States. An increase in the government whaling bounty was an added incentive to put more vessels into this extremely lucrative trade. This painting was engraved and published twice. The first occasion by John & Josiah Boydell of Cheapside in 1789 and again in 1795, by Fran. Ambrosi. Two separate printings would suggest a strong popular demand amongst whaling ship owners, masters and crews, for whom a generic image would perhaps be rather more attractive than one of vessels belonging to their rivals.
