Wade was a british army officer and commander-in-chief. Famous for building roads, the 'military ways' through Scotland. Commander-in-Chief of the troops sent into Scotland against the Jacobites in 1745, for a short time, until relieved by the more dynamic Cumberland, after which he retired.
