A portrait of Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657-1757), standing by a telescope, gazing up at a moon with a human face. Fontenelle was a French author known for his accessible scientific texts during the Age of Enlightenment. He died one month short of his centenary.

The French counter-attack on Quiberon, a stronghold on an isthmus in Britanny, where a Royalist force had landed backed by the British navy. The republicans won, and, despite reassurances from the victors, 750 of the Royalists who surrendered were executed by firing squad. Published in the 'Collection complète des tableaux historiques de la révolution française'.
