A wine merchant and cricket administrator, Aislabie joined the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1802, becoming President in 1823 & acting as secretary from 1822 until his death. A large man, he averaged 3.15 runs in over 100 innings, taking only eight wickets, 1808-41. Towards the end of his careet he needed a substitute not only to run for him when batting but also to field. Despite his lack of skill he was very popular. In 1841, he took the MCC team to Rugby for the match celebrated in 'Tom Brown's School Days' by Thomas Hughes.

A 8' statue of Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805), dressed as a Roman soldier, standing on a pedestal flanked by figures of Fortitude & Prudence. Commissioned by the residents of Calcutta, designed by John Bacon senior and completed by his son John Bacon junior, it is now in the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, India. Governor-General of India (1786-1793), Charles Cornwallis became famous for his reforming administration. He established the Cornwallis (or Bengal) code for stamping out corruption and pioneered a more professional, salaried civil service. His improvements had valuable long-term consequences for the effective government of India.

A series of six vignettes telling the story of an anthropomorphic frog, based on a folk song that can be traced back to the Scots 'The Frog cam to the Myl dur' in 1548. The frog courts a mouse, but at the wedding the rodents are killed by cats, but frog escapes, only to be eaten by a duck.

A stout, ugly, and elderly woman holds in her left hand a barber's block, with a carved head in profile, on which is an elaborate pyramidal wig with ringlets. This she is covering with powder or flour from a dredger. Her back is turned to the casement window through which look two grinning old women, wearing frilled muslin caps. Behind on the wall, in deep shadow, is a picture of a dome inscribed 'The Pantheon'. Attributed to Philip Dawe (c. 1750 - 1791?).

A wealthy young man at a card table getting sharped. Having lost his fortune, he later borrows money from a usurer, joins the army, fights a duel and dies from his wounds. One of a rare series of nine plates by George Dawe, updating Hogarth's 'Rake's Progress'. Dawes was best known for his portraits of Russian military figures of the Napoleonic Wars, now in the Hermitage Museum.

A fanciful scene of the Scottish explorer Mungo Park (1771-1806) lying barefoot, under an awning, being tended by a native woman, during his expedition in search of the source of the Niger in 1795-7. Georgian Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire, composed a song around this act of charity, for which this is an illustration.

Dmitry Dmitrievich Shepelev (1771-1841). Born into a noble family he enlisted as a sergeant in the Russian Life Guards in 1782. He served in Poland (1794), Persia (1796), Switzerland (1799, under Rimsky-Korsakov) and the Battle of Austerlitz (1805). In 1813 he led an advance guard of Wittgenstein's Corps that captured Koenigsberg. In 1815 he became commander of the 2nd Hussar Division, but had to retire due to ill-health the following year. George Dawe (1781 - 1829) spent from 1819 to 1828 in St Petersburg, invited by Tsar Alexander to paint the portraits of the superior officers who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Over 300 of these are in the Hermitage Museum.

An East Indiaman, which was a ship operating under charter or license to any of the any of the East India Companies, and usually ran between England, the Cape of Good Hope and India, with main ports in Bombay, Madras an Calcutta.

A half-length portrait of Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov (1782-1856) in dress uniform and fur cloak. After commanding a grenadier division during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting at both Borodino and Leipzig, Vorontsov commanded the corps of occupation in France 1815-18. In 1823, the year this portrait was published, he was appointed governor-general of 'Novorossiya'. George Dawe (1781-1829) spent from 1819 to 1828 in St Petersburg, invited by Tsar Alexander to paint the portraits of the superior officers who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars. His most famous work, an example of Tyneside Dialect Literature, is The Pitman's Pay, originally published between 1826 and 1830. He went on to write many other songs and pieces of prose, most of which were published by George Routledge & Sons of The Broadway, Ludgate, London. One of his best known and loved works was 'The Weshin' Day', and his last was 'The Market Day' written towards the end of his life.
