The Lord Mayor stands on a balcony of the Mansion House, wearing his robes and a fool's cap, as London burns, with St Paul's Cathedral, the Monument and Tower of London in flames. He holds a hose between his legs, directing a spray down on the heads of the Jacobins and their torches, with the reference to Gulliver suggesting he is urinating. John Atkins (c.1754-1838, Lord Mayor of London 1818-9) had made a speech in which he claimed the radicals wanted 'to fire the Metropolis and murder the inhabitants', after which he was heckled with cries of 'Fire Fire!' & 'Smoke Jack'

Four young bloods have attacked an old woman on a donkey with a pannier of potatoes. Their hair is cropped, and they have bludgeons. One has cut off the donkey's tail; another, who holds it, has fallen backwards. A third fills his hat with potatoes which have fallen from the donkey's basket, while a fourth stands with clenched fists facing the old woman. On the collar of a bulldog beside him is inscribed 'Barrymore' (reversed, and only legible in a mirror). The print was published in the 'Attic Miscellany' in 1791.

A satirical commentary on the Bank Restriction Act 1797 which removed the requirement for the Bank of England to convert banknotes into gold. This period, known as the Restriction Period, lasted until 1821. The scene depicts a costermonger, or street seller walking with a cart, a flag sign on the cart states 'No bank notes or coppers taken'. Behind him is a street cryer who says "Here's your perry winkles, winkles, winkles. O!_ a Guinea a pint_John! Vheel the Ba'ree over to the lady!_" In the background are signs which state 'J.Silver Gold Refiner', 'T.Brush the Regular Gold Dustman', 'G.Swab Water Gilder' and 'JW.Blows Gold Beater'.

Bartholomew Fair is depicted in a frying pan held above a fire by a huge horned demon with a toasting fork. Two imps hold up scrolls listing the 'Amusements of the People', including 'Drunkenness, Riot, Robbery, Rascality', more demons on top left. A tent has large advert for "Wild Beasts". An attack on the lawlessness of Bartholomew Fair, before an 1840 ban on exhibitions sent it into decline, ceasing completely by 1855.

A satirical scene depicting the Regent, drunk, sitting with one leg on the supper table, leaning back in his chair. He puts a hand under the chin of each of two maidservants. The one on the left stands by the fire, holding steak tongs and a glass of wine. He says to her: "Dolly, I like your chops. Soon, I’ll discover the beauties of the Kremlin. Dolly, I think I’ll make you a Duchess. You’d be a nice, fat Duchess, and Cis here will be a Countess. Do you want to be a Duchess?" She replies, "Anything you want, your Highness!" General Bloomfield stands up to hand a glass of wine to Cis, saying, "Here, Cis, drink some Claret. A Countess should only drink Claret." A group of men and cooks crowd in the doorway to watch. One of them says, "What will he do with Dolly?" Another replies, "I think you’re finished with Monsieur Fricassée." The table has decanters and candelabras. The Pavilion, with its onion domes, was called the "little Kremlin."

The second; a company of ladies, shocked and standing on furniture to avoid an insect-like 'black beadle', who wears his robes of office and carries his staff, a maid to the left, ringing the bell; five smaller insect-like 'black beadles' below the image, fleeing to the left and right.

Bleeding Neptune or a Scotch Experiment !!

Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville bleeds Neptune from his forearm, while Alexander Trotter collects the guineas spouting from his left arm. Melville, the first lord of the Admiralty, and Trotter, paymaster of the navy, were investigated for financial irregularities in their management of the navy. When the commission's report came out in March 1805 (shortly before the Isaac Cruikshank print which this etching copies), Melville was cleared of lining his own pockets, while Trotter's financial speculations were in fact successful and standard practice amongst civil servants of the day.

A full length portrait of William Bridle, gaoler of Ilchester Bastille, shown within the prison holding leg irons, manacles and a hangman's noose. Radical activist Henry Hunt was imprisioned for his role in a rally in Manchester which came to be known as the Peterloo Masscare, he served his term in Ilchester Prison and whilst there brought a case against the gaoler William Bridle for drunkeness, gambling, neglect of duty, licentiousness towards female prisoners and torture. Bridle was found guilty and removed. This portrait is the frontispeice to 'Investigation at Ilchester Gaol in the county of Somerset into the conduct of William Bridle the Gaoler, before the commissioner appointed by the crown' published in 1821.

He is likened to a street-seller of brooms, implying venality. By George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878).

A post-boy holds out a scroll, 'Account of the Total Defeat of the Dutch Fleet' to a Dutch council. The president complains that the English have taken the Dutch colonies and now had destroyed their fleet. On the table is a map of France with Holland marked as 'Department 85', and the 'Plan of the Invasions of England Ireland Scotland the Cape of Good hope Gibralter East & West Indies China &c. &c. &c. &c.'. Admiral Jan Willem de Winter had been coerced by the French to go to sea to attack Edinburgh and Glasgow then land in the north of Ireland. British Admiral Adam Duncan put paid to the scheme with a superb victory at Camperdown on the 11th October. This satire was published only four days later.

Hone uses the device of the ladder to plot a simple linear history of Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel’s unhappy marriage. Each page of the pamphlet describes a step on the ladder and is accompanied by an illustration. The pamphlet came with a 'toy', a folded cardboard "ladder" which depicted the various stages of Queen Caroline's marriage to George IV. She was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Queen of Hanover from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821 as the estranged wife of King George IV. She was Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820.

Don't forget the two babbies!"

Two scenes showing Captain Croker's discovery of European slaves in Algiers, between the 16th-19th centuries the corsairs of the Barbary states would raid small coastal towns in the Mediterrenean and ships, selling those they captured into slavery. Croker had been a commander of one of the ships Lord Exmouth had sent to attack Algiers in an attempt to end the slavery practices and free European slaves. The scenes show Croker visiting the hospital in which many slaves were treated for injuries and Croker watching lines of slaves being driven back to the city after working in the fields. A street scene in snow. A cook's boy has fallen, and the dishes from the tray on his head (a sucking-pig, &c.) slide to the ground. A man with skates muffled in great-coat and two ladies holding muffs to their faces hasten towards the spectator; others hurry along in back view. The nearest house is a 'Lottery office', a man comes out holding a ticket '5000 ... Blank'. In the background two men shovel snow from the roof of a high house onto passers by; one flees, another is prostrate.

A mixture of useful dates (i.e. when the British Museum is open), satire and caricature. The last plate is 'The Banquet of the Black Dolls' with a page of text. In ink 'To Edward C. Grant esq with thanks for his assistance from the Author.

John Bull In The Council Chamber.

Etching with hand colour, Whatman 1811 watermark; sheet 210 x 495mm (8¼ x 19½"). Trimmed within plate. Folds as issued. Some small tears in the folds. Right side ragged. Large repaired tear on left.
Plate from the 'Scourge', vi, frontispiece. In the center of the design, a caricatured Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) sits enthroned beneath a canopy. Her knees are spread wide, and she has one slender foot elevated on a cushioned stool, a coffer holding the "Hastings Diamond"; in her left hand she holds a sceptre topped with an eagle, and her left elbow rests on a bolster bearing the name "German Sausage," which is perched atop a large mound of greenery inside a receptacle labeled "Sauer Kraut." Perched on her feathered cap is a small crown. A lean, hideous courtier (left) kneels and offers her a box labelled 'Strasbu[rgh],' from which she takes snuff; another (right) stands with her knees bent and holds another box bearing the same inscription. Both sport feminine mob-caps, quasi-military attire with epaulets, and have grotesque comic profiles. Behind the first, a third, capless, holds out a jar of 'Strasbu[rgh]' snuff. Three small, hideous demons sprint forward from the left, each holding a box on their head that reads "Real Strasburg," "Princes Mixture," and "Irish Blaguard." A fourth moves forward from the right, carrying a massive jar of "Royal Strasburgh" atop his head. The Queen's festooned canopy is held up by terminal pillars topped with half-length representations of repulsive, nude hags resting their arms on a cluster of money bags bearing the words "1000" or "... 00." A serpent with fangs and fiery jaws is entwined around each, projecting the words "Pride Corruption" on the left and "Malice Hatered" on the right. "Am I not the Q—n?" she asks. I refuse to give up even the slightest bit of my authority—more Strasburgh there—present the reports to me." Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool (1770-1828) is depicted on the left, his body covered in scales, his tail barbed, small horns growing from his forehead, cloven hooves, and an incorrectly placed star on his breast. He is holding out a paper with the words "Secret Inquiry" written on it and is making an exclamatory gesture with his extended arms. " May it please your — The precious Ore resists every Chemical attempt at deterioration— so the Virtue of injured Woman repels the touch of Slander & rises superior to its malevolence. I take Shame to myself at discomfiture—but the Princess is declared "Innocen!" Edward Law, 1st Baron Ellenborough (1750-1818) is seen behind Liverpool on the left, wearing a wig and a gown, and facing right with her fists clenched. "By Hell, I thought to shame the Rogues, but the d—d Brewer [Samuel Whitbread II (1764-1815), the Princess's champion] was too much for me," he says with a frown. "May it please your M—g—ty the Reports of the Physicians is admirably confused & equivocating & well calculated to meet the public eye!" bows Sir Henry Halford (1766-1844), who is positioned on the extreme left and has a huge, hooked nose. He holds a paper with the title "Medical monthly Report." The Regent (1762-1830) is pictured on the far right, sleeping in a cradle with the motto "Ich Dein" and three unkempt ostrich feathers on top. A decanter of "Curacoa" rests between his legs, and he is holding a doll meant for Isabella, Marchioness of Hertford (1760-1834) that has enormous breasts and a spikey crown. A ragged Irishman is seen in profile to the right, kneeling before the cradle and holding out a piece of paper titled "Catholic Claims." Wearing the Chancellor's wig and gown, John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838) kneels beside the cradle, offering the child his arms in defense against the Irishman. "Pat, take it easy or you'll wake up the Royal Conscience, who is currently sound asleep." he says. "By St. Patrick, but there's no risk of upsetting it as long as your Lordship is its Keeper," Pat responds. John Bull is standing behind Pat, his hands up in shock and his legs arched. He looks to the left and cries, " Mercy on me what have we hear, Conscience asleep! on the one hand & the Manufacture of Reports on the other— Is this the way I am bubbled?!" As though he is standing in the opening of a cave, rocks surround him.
