Francis Le Piper (d.1695), artist whose only surviving works are a series of iillustrations to Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' (divided between Tate and Rye Art Gallery) and a group of drawings in the British Museum. According to Buckeridge (whose memoir is the source of all biographical information about the artist), Le Piper's travels took him as far as Egypt. This portrait, published by Isaac Beckett (for whom Le Piper worked at one point), is the only known likeness of Le Piper. No in CS; but Russell (13a)

A three-quarter portrait of Major General Thomas Maxwell (d.1693), wearing a long wig, lace cravat, armour, fringed sash around his waist, holding a baton. A Scottish Catholic in the British army and second husband of Jane Bickerton, Duchess of Norfolk, Maxwell stayed loyal to James II after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He went to Ireland, becoming a colonel in the Seventh Regiment of dragoons at Bangor and fighting at the Battle of the Boyne. In 1691 he commanded the garrison of Athlone during the siege, after which he was captured and sent to the Tower of London. Released in 1693, he entered French service and was killed at the Battle of Marsaglia the same year. Chaloner Smith: 180, ii of ii. Not in Sharp.

Portrait of Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (1638-1709), courtier and diplomat. He welcomed the arrival of William of Orange, who created Montagu Viscount Monthemer and Earl of Montagu in 1689. In 1705 he was created Duke of Montagu and Marquess of Montherner. His Bloomsbury residence, Montagu House, was purchased to house the collection of the British Museum, which purpose it served until it was demolished in the 1840s to make room for larger premises. Bust portrait of Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695), composer, based on the painting by John Closterman (1660 - 1711). Purcell is said to have written his first composition at the age of eleven in honour of Charles II's birthday. He became organist of Westminster Abbey in 1679, and of the Chapel Royal in 1682. He composed religious anthems, secular songs, instrumental pieces, odes, music for plays and 'semi-operas', and the famous Dido and Aeneas, one of the first English operas, and the Fairy Queen. According to John Evelyn he was 'esteemed to be the best composer of any Englishman hitherto'.

A half-length portrait of a man in a long dark wig and lace cravat. His precise identity was not known to Chaloner Smith or the British Museum. However there is a floor slab in St Olave's Church in the City of London for ''John Sansom of the Custom House, died 20 April 1705'', suggesting this is the John Sansom the Elder who was Secretary to the Commissioners of the Customs. CS 225, i of ii.
