Robert Brown (1714-1791) was Clerk of the Tylers' and Bricklayers' Company. He wore peculiar dress which caused him to be mistaken for a distressed clergyman. Her holding a document headed with a crest, wearing a peaked black hat, short dark wig, dark suit and cloak trimmed with horizontal bands of dark fur. A rare mezzotint. 505 x 355mm (20 x 13¾"), with large margins. Extensive restoration.
A three-quarter length portrait, wearing a plain, dark tail-coat and a white wig with rolls at the sides, pointing at a full basket on the left, his left hand on a cane, resting the elbow on a barrel, his tricorn hat behind him on a third barrel. Behind are riverside buildings. Not in NPG; the BM has three examples, all trimmed.

Portrait of Israel Mauduit (1708-87), merchant, writer and colonial agent, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1751, published to illustrate his obituary. His 1760 political pamphlet 'Considerations on the Present German War' attacked the use of British troops to protect George II's (then George III's) Hanoverian interests during the Seven Years' War (1754-63) and went through five editions. He later served as colonial agent for Massachusetts and wrote 'A Short View of the History of the New England Colonies: With Respect to their Charters and Constitution', 1769.
