On the right a winged child standing, in profile to left, with a helmet on his head, holding a mask of Satyre in front of his face; another child behind him, with three more children on the left, looking towards the mask. Illustration to chapter "Theodore and Honoria" in 'Fables' by John Dryden (London, 1797). Text on verso faintly visible. Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734 - 1808) was the daughter of the second Duke of Marlborough. Her first marriage was to Lord Bolingbroke in 1757. When this marriage was dissolved she married Topham Beauclerk. She was a talented amateur artist whose designs were much admired by Horace Walpole. De Vesme 1718.II. See Ref: 13808 & 32030

A scene from Gottfried August Bürger's ballad 'Lenore', written 1773. When William, Lenore's fiancé, fails to return with the Prussian army after the Battle of Prague (1757, during the Seven Years' War), she argues with God, complaining about his unfairness. At midnight 'William' appears and takes her to a graveyard, where he is revealed as Death, with scythe and hourglass; the marriage bed is a grave in which William's skeleton lies in shattered armour. One of four plates in 'Leonora. Translated from the German of Gottfried Augustus Bürgher, by W. R. Spencer, Esq. With designs by the Right Honourable Lady Diana Beauclerc.' Beauclerk was the daughter of the third Duke of Marlborough.

A woman walking and balancing a basket of flowers on her hat, her child by her side. Illustration of verses by James Thomson, whose 'The Seasons' was a popular source for artists favouring rural subject matter. Engraved from a design by Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734-1808) by P.W. Tomkins, who like many former pupils of Bartolozzi mentioned as much on their prints to benefit from Bartolozzi's reputation.
